  • How strong are the manual gearboxes?

was just curious to know how strong these R150F gearboxes are in our 90 series. The manual ones.
Can they take abit of canning and off roading?

Hi i have already replaced my gearbox because of a 5th gear failure. i think because of towing. i have had no probs with gearbox offroad. just dont boot it in 5th gear low range because the extra torque might damage the gear because of it strength and size.

The design of the gearbox (5th gear is off to the side, so it is not a straight drive) means you shouldn't tow too heavy a trailer in 5th gear, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th are straight drive, so you will have no problem there.
I have tried to explain it in the simplest way I can, maybe someone can explain it better in the simplest terms.

Thanks guys. Reason why I ask is I got a very very slight whine when I drive. To me it sounds like any normal manual car . Been in an automatic for a couple of years now so not sure if the sound should be normal.
        Must be input shaft bearing?

I dont tow. I dont go offroad.Im a very light driver too. Hoping its just normal wear and tear and nothing more sinister.

Besides that the gears change fine and drives fine.

            Loud whine?

What happened when the box let go?

            How much to replace?

            Thanks McClint

Gradually got louder, then i think the syncros began to fail. So i parked it up and bought a 2 nd hand box off ebay for $1000 with about 62000 kms on it. I still have the old box but still havent pulled it apart to find out the problem yet.

a whine of any type means there is an area of wear associated with that gear, You can normally patch up the problem by changing the gearbox oil and adding an additive such as the nulon gearbox treatment. Alternatively if you dont mind spending the coin use some redline shockproof gearoil, this will have a huge difference on shifting and noise.
