  • Looking for some help with a little problem.

    Hi everybody,
    not sure if this is the right place to post, but I have a small problem
    Its only happened afew times, once on road but happened quite badly/annoyingly today whilst off road ( Climbing a small gradient). I just get complete loss of power, like its run out of fuel. All light on the dash come on. Has anyone else experienced this problem before, or this a gremlin that im going to have to work through and maybehave to wait for something to break? Im not even sure if its electrial or mechanical? Any advise on what I can test or try or anything.
    Seems to be fine driving to and from work everyday. Just dont know what to do, but would rather seek the advise of you guys before spending any money at the mechanics.

    Hi Cam,
    I suspect it is an electrical problem although it could be anything. What lights come on the dash exactly? Does the engine stall or just loose power?

    Does it happen when running on either the main tank or sub tank? It could also be due to a sudden drop in pressure in the fuel rail.

      what engine have you got mate? Had a similar issue while sand driving at robe, best i got when i took it back in for a check up was a shrugofthe shoulders, not seend the issue again since though...

        Sorry, I am in melbourne. Was at bunyip state park. Running a stock 2002 3.0td. Was on the sub tank, but changed to a full main tank and still had problems. If I remember correctly it was all the lights that first come on when you start the car but im not positive. it seems to bog down and then just stall.. It first happened in normal on the stubby, but also in 4 low. Was originally thinking fuel filter, but like I said it runs fine in day to day driving.
        Can also be a little hard to start in the morning. Ie 5 seconds ish cranking, but it is a little cold in melbourne at 5am.

          I'm not an expert on the 1KZ-TE but it sounds like a loss of fuel pressure. As the dash lights are coming on, its possibly an electrical issue with the fuel pump.

          But then again it may not be an issue of fuel pressure. A quick search of the forum dug up this thread where another member had similar (but not exactly the same) symptoms of loss of power one minute and then seemingly normal operation the next.

            Ah, I hope its not option B. There is no smoke, which is hopefully a good thing. It is still under a satutory warranty from the dealer we bought it from so hoping if there is a problem, it will be up to them to pick up the tab.
            Hell, im hoping its an electrical problem with the fuel pump, ill speak to my mechanic friend on how it can test all that.

              Now that I think more about it the lights on the dash are going on because it has stalled and the car is in the ignition position.
              Im still hoping its the Fuel Pump. Would make sense as that is what it feels like when your driving, its just like its run out of fuels.

                hi miniac , im no expert on your vehicles . but i have 3 diesels . to me it sounds like a fuel starvation problem or thats where i would start. replace fuel filters and water separators if you have one and if you can drain the bottom of the fuel tanks do that . sometimes you can get algae growing in your system and if youve ever encountered it in a filter you will wonder how your fuel pump could deal with it . maybe get some diesel additive that deals with algae .
