  • help wanted with noise

hello. i've got a high pitched whirring noise that seems to be coming from around the front pasenger footwell area on my aytomatic. it does it in any gear and neutral, at idle and low speeds. above around 45kph and you can't hear it. i can't hear it if i lift the bonnet due to engine noise. can you help with any ideas as to what it may be? i've only had the vehicle 24hrs.

    thanks.

Could you supply some info like engine type, transmission type, year and model. Then others may be able to relate to simular happenings to them.
    cheers

Also, does the noise change with more or less engine revs at a stand still? Do you get it as soon as you start up or does it take a while to come on? I assume when you say it happens in Neutral that the noise doesn't seem to be related to the vehicle moving? Could it be something like an aircon fan?

Also do a Test with the AC ON and OFF and fan Off and lets us know the results!

I have had to drop the ac fan out twice now to remove leaves and twigs.
If this is your problem you can easily tell just by changing fan speeds.
Drop the black cover, unplug wires and remove three small bolts holding in the fan - easy.

sorry for not getting back sooner but i've been away. the noise is not related to AC or normal fan, it was the first thing i checked. once i get up to speed, you can't hear it due to the noise of driving, but its still there. its not speed related (same all the time) same noise in neutral, drive, reverse, hi and lo, diff-lock OD on and off. very occasionally when starting from cold it isn't present for 20 minutes or so.

            any ideas, (3ltr TD AUTOMATIC.)

            thanks.

Because it is constant regardless of speed or revs, I can only think of a couple of things. Not having a diesel to check out, I might be way off, but -
It could be resonating from the fuel pump via a loose or unclamped pipe/hose.
It could be the pollution canister (mine does make a noise at idle).
It could also be a vacuum hose behind the glovebox.
While you can't hear it when the engine is running you might be able to track it by feel.

thanks. a few things to check out. can you explain more about the vacuum hose behind the fuel pump?

i've read elsewhere that it could be the fuel return valve. what do you think? also if it is and whilst waiting for my workshop manual, where is this valve? is it easy to get to and check/replace?

                    thanks.
