Pay for the timing belt and pump... take the car home... order in a brand new Denso radiator (genuine product at half the price of Toyota)... swap it out yourself!

I don't have the skill to do it myself and hubby isn't mechanically inclined at all. The radiator they are supplying is 1/3rd the price of the Toyota genuine, don't know brand but was told it was exactly the same as the Toyota one (so hopefully the Denso version).

I got my Prado back late yeterday, actually hubby collected it as I was at work by the time they called. I'm now $2500 poorer, ouch! It's had the water pump, timing belt, cam seals, tension pulleys, and the radiator replaced on top of the normal service items for a 100,000K service. The paperwork has the radiator listed as a reco which I'm not too impressed about, waiting to hear back from the dealer on that one.

You want to look at fitting one of these-
Enginesaver Low Water Alarms from www.enginesaver.com.au
Discounted to $160 for PP members.
I'm not affiliated with them but I have installed one and they are great. Radiator level drops by 15-20mm and the alarm goes off.

For that price I'd want a bloody new radiator, wow that would have hurt handing that over. Cant remember exactly what the 100 thou service entailed on the 90 series petrol ? But $2500 shiiiiiiit yeah that woulda hurt. Be interesting to see what their response is to your question in regards to that item ????? Cheers Steve

The 100,000K service on a VZJ95R doesn't normally include the timing belt, I just had it done earlier due to the age of the car (that and the water pump needed replacing). Those items on there own contributed almost $1200 to the bill. The radiator only contrbuted ~$270 to the bill, the rest was all the other sundry service items.

They told me the radiator is actually a new one (albeit aftermarket), they just forgot to change the job code on their system. I don't know if that's true but there is no spray paint on the core and no signs of overspray on the top tank, recos normally get resprayed.

Thanks for the link, will look into it. Honestly though in the 10 years we've owned the Prado it's never had a water loss issue, just this one incident.

But all you need is one incident. Like when Noobie's 120 dropped all its coolant and it didn't get noticed. That was around a $12k fix it. Or when AJ120, while traversing Madigans Line got a leak and without the alarm could have been in strife.
And for the $160 that All Trac are charging PP'ers, is cheap insurance.

or a stick through the new rad...
or a fan blade through the new rad during a water crossing...
                  or a cracked head...

lots of things can contribute to a water leak and your temp gauge ill not tell you about it as there's no water to measure the temp of. Cheap insurance.

Depends on the year of the vehicle, mine is a VZJ95R and it does as it is a 97 model

OK, I recall now you mentioned the year issue earlier in this thread. Mines a 2002 model and the service book doesn't list it till the 150,000K service.

At ten years old, the Timing belt would have small cracks all through it regardless of kilometres travelled.

All good, I sold that Prado a couple of years ago now with a new timing belt.
