  • Engine 'idle up' for winching - 90 series

    Hi

Anyone have any thoughts about fitting something to allow for engine 'idle up' during winching?

I know some of the Land Cruisers have this and other have idle up for the air con so I figure it might be catered for in the 90 series wiring somewhere.

Otherwise I'll get into the electronics for the accelerator and make my own.

You should consider the possibility of over loading the Alternator if you speed up
    the idle.

My Rotronics battery isolator has a feature to disable the winch when charging the
Aux (winch connected to Aux) for this reason.

    Cheers

      Good point!
I think most non Rotronics users have that problem anyway.
As the alternator is at a higher potential than the battery, its going to supply all the power it can until its output sags and the battery then joins in.
Maybe not such a good idea with my 80 amp alternator...

      Anyone else?

A good point there, was out in the mud a couple of weeks ago with an old patrol and found out that they have an idle up knob right about where the dash dimmer is on my 90 series. It seems to work similar to a choke cable in that the knob is connected to a cable which im guessing is attatched to the throttle body the only difference is that when you pull on the cable revs increase then by turning it 90 degrees it holds the cable in place and holds the engine revving at the desired level.
Not sure if this is similar to what you mean but sounds like a good plan given the extra drain that a winch motor can place on your battery and alternator.

Yes, exactly what I mean and lots of 4by's have this. Old Land Rovers through to the LC70's.
The Prado is a 'fly by wire' throttle with no Bowden type mechanical cable so it uses the ECU to bump up the revs. I'm pretty sure there is a terminal on the ECU that simply shorts to ground to up the revs.
Some of the 120 and 150 models have it to boost startup revs in very cold climates when heaters and everything else are switched on.

However, as Leigh points out, this will increase the load on the alternator a bit and could burn it out so do at your own risk.
I'm still going to do it but this point must be taken into consideration.

MalcomM, What engine & what year is your 90. looking at mine and its a cable that controls the trottle body. I know there is a by pass under throttle body (ISC vavle) witch is how the ECU controls the idle. Not sure if you could switch this manually to get the out come you are after. But if i was you and have the same engine/throttle set up as me, I would just pick up a bike brake cable and gear lever set up and try and retro fit that to the throttle cable, I think roothy from 4wd Action showed this mod on old milo not long ago in a dvd from memory. Had the bike gear lever bolted to the gear stick and ran the cable down the stick and under the floor to the throttle cable. Worked a treat and would save mucking around with wiring, and possible be creating more headarchs with possible fault codes/ ECU problems. Just my throughts???? Kris
