Mad custom 90 series with 80 Series running gear.

My mates got this mad idea of getting a cheap petrol 90 series striping everything fitting 80 series running gear with the idea of getting so great flex bigger rubber under it n strong running gear to take the abuse. Don't forget it's just in the idea side of things at the moment. So feel free to give some feed back as it's a build that would be sweet to do but premaping it outs the best way to turn a mad build into reality after all.

Y not build a bad ass 90 series. Plus he's got all the running gear out of his bombed out 80 the rolled a couple of months back.

Showed him the link to the build up on the sweet prado. Kind of what he's thinking about but they had to do a diff flip to get the pumpkin on the left handside. My mate was thinking leve it on the right hand side because when u fit the hole running gear from a 80 that mean motor n gear box as well.

in that case the idea will not work, the motor from the 80 is an inline 6, where as the motor from the Prado is a V, that means the engine bay is shorter, so the straight motor will not fit in.

Who said anything about the motor being a in line 6. Its more likely to be a V8 or a V6.

Never heard of an 80 series with a V6 motor, or are you just thinking about finding a motor that attaches to the 80 series box?

Either way it is a massive project, I would have thought the Prado rear end in the 90 has plenty of potential for flex and the motor and gearboxes are solid enough. Just the IFS that is limited. So a SAS'ed front end would be easier and probably be just as good in the end.

It's already been done befor the guys from Africa. He even went in Warn ARB Outback Challenge a couple of years back.

Well we've just got 80series bits to work with. So that's what we would be fitting under the front. As for the rear end in the 90 we would want it to be the sa with as the front so a rear 80series diff fits the bill. Plus who wants a 5 link that works ok when u could have a full double triangluler that works the best. Not side ways moving diff like the 5 link. Oh and we are just talking about running 33 it would have to be 37 as there is a set sitting in the shed.

As for the motor we know that the 80 didn't have a V6. But just about anything can go in front of the turbo diesel auto that weve got. So that the lest of the problems for now.

We are more thinking that the diff may have to be cut down so as to fit under the 90 as it maybe to wide.

We've got a mate who has 35 on a 90 with just a 2inch with not rubbing at all. So we would have to step it up and go to 37. Not worry if dirt happens heaps of picture will be taken so everone can c.

I doubt he has 35s and a 2" lift without rubbing. 33's cause serious rubbing unless extensive mods are done to create the clearance.

I think you're best to spend the money on an 80 series and keep the running gear from the rolled 80 for spares. These days theres very little difference in price for a second hand 80 series or 95 series.

Well hate to tell u but ya wrong. 35s do fit. Just got to be comeone with a grinder, mig, hammer and have a really good cross up section right next door to your house. Then it's just time and more time and more time be for its all working and looks ok doing it. These guys on this forum that have seen it in action. U could always ask them. Maixxs90 ages are to guys that have seen it for sure.

Mate the gear from the rolled 80 is all comp stuff why would I keep that as spares? As for doing up a 80 again there is so many things that I would do different to the suspension n links and reworking the body why not think about doing it to a prado. Why do ppl put money into the reason as to how something should be done is beyond me.

A good challenge is always great fun after all if it always got put in the to hard bin becuase someone said it couldnt be done or its a wast if time we would all be sitting at home on the couch.

Your brief in the first post was pretty slim on details, you asked for feedback and never mentioned that your mate has money to burn. Most of us live in a world where spending bucket loads of cash on a wild project is not a realistic option, so of course when giving feedback people are gunna suggest that financially your throwing bucket loads of cash at a project for no other reason than to be different and take on a challenge, which is great if you can afford it.

Presumably this is going to be a comp truck? doesn't sound like anything that would ever get a rego inspection passed, that makes a huge difference if its a comp veicle and not going on the road.

Anyway, enough talk, get a 90, start cutting and post some pics

I'd love to see some pics of that! Also the mods done to fit the 35's. Are you sure he doesn't have a body lift too?
