  • Steering Rack

Hi guys I put up a few posts here and there anyway. I got my car serviced at 196k anyway. It turns out my steering rack needs to be replaced. I have been quoted 11-1200. First of all, does this cost sound right for a reconditioned one. They also told me if its ruined then it would be another 500.

Now symptoms, it had a slight vibration before wheel alightnment, now grand. There is no play in the steering wheel either. Can anyone give me tiled to see for myself if its worn. Also it is not leaking.

So thanks for the help in advance

Mate it sounds a little dodgy i had to replace mine at 205k mine had a little play in it and it costed me about 500 off good old ebay for a brand new one. Mine wasnt leaking either. I replaced mine myself to save on labour then all i had to do was take it in for a wheel alignment. I would proberly take it to another place or even a wheel dealer to get a second apinion.

    hope this helps

Why are they saying the rack is shot mate ??

        Internal leakage ?
And if so how did they diagnose that.

It is basically a double acting hydraulic ram, with a rotary flow control valve fitted to it

Any play would be rack ends and or tie rods I would have thought.

I just did the rack ends and tie rods on mine, got the parts from Walsh’s in Cairns, about 50 bucks for each pair.

They told me there was a lot of play in the rack but didnt find a leak. When they did tell me they said do it next service. Ie 6000km away. However my warranty was about to run out so I said fine. Warranty covers 800 dollars of it. I thought rack ends too would solve movement anyone any suggestions. I'm in the same end of the work as yourself Ken Cairns is home.

Hi madmac there was nothing to say it was my steering rack, all i thought it was, was the tierods gone again as i had the same play in the steering other than that i wouldnt of suspected it was my rack.

If there is no leakage, but play is the problem, then it is either the tie rods or the rack ends, or both end of story.
The rest of the rack is a solid ram, with a piston seal inside the cylinder, so there is no were else to cause play.

You do not need a new rack if excess play is the problem, only rack ends and or tie rods, 50 bucks for the rack ends and about the same for the tie rods.

Take a day to do it tops, easier with a hoist, but not that bad on stands either.
