  • 2.7 Towing

Hi all, I'm Chris and thinking about getting a RV 2.7. I have an old 60 Series at the moment, and as good as she has been to me. I think it's time for something newer, smother and quieter.

I have a mate selling the 2.7, it's a one ower got 210,000 the clock manual, toyota flares and an alloy bullbar. Others then that it's stock.

What I'm wanting to ask is how do they tow? I know there not the best tow rig out there, but what I want to tow is a hilux, weekend fun car. I know that the prado can tow 2500kg, and I'm going to be getting very very close to that. But how would it go? Anyone pulling that weight with there 2.7's.

    Thanks
    Chris.

I've done it and I wouldn't recommend it.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 2.7, I reckon it's better than the v6. But it's too small for towing comfortably.

When you say too small, do you mean the 2.7 or the weight of the car?

I will not be pulling this weight often, only to the odd comp weekend. Maybe once every two months, to cityview and cruiser park. But there are some big hills on your way up to cruiser park, so if its to low on power that's ok, ill just going slow. But if you mean small as in the car feel unsafe that's a different story.

I love the 2.7 and it has more than enough to hold its own pulling my SWB 90 all packed up and with a RTT.

However, I don't know how will it perform while towing. I sure wouldnt do it for extended drives...

The weight of the vehicle isn't so bad it's just a lack of power.

The 2.7 does weigh a lot less than the V6, plus you have different gearing and wheel diameter. So with that in mind the 2.7 will actually tow better than the V6. The 2.7 has (I think) about 118kw where as the V6 is 136kw, and the torque curve is better in the 2.7 than the V6 down low in the rev range.
