  • Dp34 chip

    Hi all,

I'm a very new pp user. I have just installed a secondhand dp chip to my 2001td auto prado around 3 weeks ago and haven't driven far from home with it as of yet. Now on the first 80km drive towards adelaide the car nearly overheated.
I am wondering if the chip was the cause of this. It did come from a 120 series prado but the pack came with the 90 series install instructions all followed correctly and set at the number 5 setting.

My prado has 190k on the clock I have put 10k since owning the car and was a 1 owner car prior to me owning it. And serviced religiously. The reason for the dp chip install was based on my research and the dp34 seemed to have the best reviews based on my exploring.

    Any response would be appreciated.

I've had a DP Chip installed in my 2000TD Manual a couple of years ago and have never had any overheating problems before or after the install except when the bottom radiator hose sprung a leak

Im not sure how the DP chip works, does it just throw in extra fuel in ?? this would cause extra heat. But I doubt the chip would be causing it. Why don't you just disconnect the chip for now and do the same run again and see how you go. That way you know wether for sure the chip is causing the issue or its some thing else. My bet its nothing to do with the chip. Any extra pressure in your overflow bottle when you stop the vehicles after doing a run ?? Cheers Steve

Yeah the bottle filled up after disconnection and then sucked it back in. I doubt it was the chip. Still ran hot so left it in adelaide to be fixed hopefully not a head also reoiled the thermo fan with silicon oil.
I did here the chips should have an exhaust temp gauge due to do something with emissions. Changed radiator cap.. Praying it's not a cracked head. Just seemed to blow water straight to the over flow and someone said the DP chip maybe the cause. Guess it's a process of elimination.

I did disconnect the chip. Just hope the initial close to overheating didn't crack the head. Just exploring what maybe the cause thanks for the input. I did check Dpchip website and it doesn't suggest there would be to much heat. Think I may give them a call. Cheers Steve

This is how I knew it was the head on mine. Around town was fine no issues but get it out on the freeway doing 100klh and it would pressurize the overflow bottle and come out of the bottle and drip/spurt out due to the exhaust gasses getting in. My mate is a mechanic and took a while to detect it. It would only open the crack when it was working hard, As I said I could drive it around town all week and there would be no issues at all, and there was no fluctuation on the temp gauge either it sat just under half. We ended up with a run down the freeway pushing it working it hard for 10 mins, pulled over my mate wacked on this device which changed I think colour from green to purple this was the indication of cracked head, this was after new thermostat, clutch coupling, radiator in and out etc, all the cheaper things first lol.......Hope its not your issue if it is DONT use chinese shit heads or another Toyota one as they havnt been modified/superseeded since day one.......Cheers Steve

Lol Steve sounds exactly the problem heating up under load.. Na won't go the cheap shit hopefully it's only a small crack and can be welded if not lucky I know a guy..Appreciate the bearing of bad news...so any suggestion on head???reconditioned??.. Now I'm still curious if the chip caused this???.

Once there cracked that's it there is no reconditioning of them as the reason they crack in the first place is there to thin and chinese shit. There is a certain brand to get will see if I can track the brand down. It has been mentioned on here before.... Cheers Steve

A few threads on this if you search. Roo recommends the AMC head.
