  • CVs Skidplate and Rock sliders

I had an interesting trip to lake Lyell this week end, with a successful climb to the top of Mt Walker in my prado!

Subsequently im gonna need a few parts replaced/upgraded.

I do recall that a member on hear can make up rock sliders for the 90, but cant remember who, are they still about??

Can any one recommend a supplier for a quality skid plate for the fuel tanks?

And im going to need to replace the CVs soon, any suggestions on a supplier?

I have had a quick site search but I have no luck with the site search engine.

any input would be much appreciated, thanks, Mat.
Hilux for work, Prado for play.

      X2 for AJ's sliders.

Don't think you can get plates for the fuel tank's. But I've replaced the front factory bash plate with a Brown Davis one. Has coped plenty of abuse and still looking pretty good.

CV's stick with the genuine one's. They seem to be the the strongest one's IMO. I've had tried the repco one's (great warranty) but didn't last. One was flogged out with less then 15000ks on it. They have replaced under warranty and also said the new one's are from a different supplier, so unsure of quality.

      Hope this helps out mate.

The to do list is getting shorter.

Whao, awesome you made it up to the top of Walker!! Any pics or vid?

I would suggest custom rock sliders as the ones commonly sold on PP are mounted to the 90 series in a questionable way. Slider themselves are solid, but not the way they mount to the 90 at rear passenger side.

Stronger fuel tank guards - none available anywhere - but sounds like something I could build in future.

CV's - without front locker get Repcos as their 5 year (?) warranty will cover failures time and time again. With front locker stick to genuine or genuine rebuilds. I've been through too many........

With all due respect Glen, I don't think there is anything questionable at all about how my sliders are mounted, but I recall we have had that discussion before.

Certainly not a single person with my 90 series sliders has ever reported a problem.

          Cheers Andrew

              Hey Andrew,

Of course you wouldn't think so.

Yes, we've discussed this before, when you stated that you're not willing to alter the design, as alternatives would require temporary removal of the sub tank for installation, which is not desirable for your customers. [ie, not as marketable]

As I've stated before I have nothing against the sliders themselves, and I'll add, I praise your high quality welding. It all comes down to that single rear passenger side mount on the 90 series, which has a compromise in it's design.

I'm glad your customers have not reported a problem. I would bet that the same customers do not regularly use the sliders on rocks, and that anyone with regular experience on rocks would have custom built their own sliders according to their needs.

              Cheers

                CVs Skidplate and Rock sliders

Make your mind up Glen, you've said you have nothing against them but then also list a bunch of things that you don't like. Instead of being negative about AJ's sliders maybe you could provide treesmith with an alternative manufacturer that you think are better?
And no I don't have AJ's sliders or am I looking for a discount 😉 I've still got the broken placky steps on. Waiting for them to fall off.

Edit: my apologies if that comes across as a bit harsh, it's not meant to be. I'm tired as hell.

And as we discussed before Glen, you came to your conclusion without ever having seen a set of my sliders. Also you have no engineering or welding and design background. If you had all of those things you would better understand how my design strengthens the area in question rather than compromise it!

I didn't change the design because you seem to be the only person who has an issue, and clearly you are not interested in a set. It's a lot of work to redesign an already great product to please one random guy on the Internet who doesn't like my design because of incorrect engineering assumptions.

As for the people who have them not using them on rock, well I'm not there to see where they drive but I know a few of them frequent the high country and seem to go pretty hard when it's called for!

                  Cheers Andrew

Awsome input guys. just an up date for you. I have decided to go with AJ,s sliders, keeping it real for the PradoPoint, ers!
I have ordered as pair of CVs from FNB4wd and they will both be fitted when the front locker goes in. If/when the break I will replace them with Toyota parts.
As for a tank guard, my 4wd mechanic will make one up for me when he replaces my faulty subtank.

Glen, as soon as I figure out how to post pics up here, I will!

You haven't understood my post. I am very clear about my opinion, which is that there is one issue with them - the rear/passenger mount on the 90 series version.

Yes, it would be nice to suggest an alternative product but all the best ones I've seen were custom made.

There's no need to visually inspect the sliders, anyone can see the design from the photos.

I'm not the only person who disagrees with the design, I'm just the only one willing to speak my mind. Whether I'm interested in buying a set from you should have no relevance on this technical matter - unless we're having a sales/marketing discussion as well.

You're making assumptions about my background. I could also make some assumptions about yours - that you have no experience with rock crawling - no experience landing a vehicle on this particular 90 series suspension mounting bracket (and being witness to the damaging results). Practical experience is essential. There's little value in boasting the practical experience of others with your product whilst simultaneously admitting you are not there to see where they drive. The high country isn't hard going - as you've stated yourself earlier this year (Easter) - didn't you say South Basalt Knob was easy in reverse whilst towing? I'd agree it was easy - I drove it in high range! Do you think people need rock sliders for tracks like that? Rock sliders are not being thoroughly tested there.

Whilst your bracket is likely to be performing some manner of strengthening of the area, there is little doubt that it could be done in a stronger way. Whether your potential customers require the additional strength or not is for them to decide. I only point out that such a mount design isn't ideal for rock crawling.

Last time AJ's sliders were discussed you had a go at me for posting in his for sale thread. This is not a for sale thread. This is thread requesting advice/opinions on 90 series protection. This is a healthy discussion about 4wd products. If such discussions are not allowed here, then there's no point having 4wd forums such as these.
