  • Just bought a 90!

I've been bidding on various Toyota 4x4's on the Japanese auctions, and finally landed a 2000 Land Cruiser Prado with the Petrol V6!

I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and currently drive a 1kz Hilux Surf (shown here with my tiny studded tires):

It's getting a little long in the tooth, the rust is creeping in, and the power accessories are beginning to fail. I'm ready for a new (old) truck.

It's a 2000 model, TZ trim level, 135,000 km's. I should be able to pick it up in Vancouver in August or September. I'd like to do some modifications to it, a small lift, two sets of larger tires (winter and summer), and some camping/fishing accessories. I'd also like a good set of recovery gear so that I can confidently drive it on to frozen lakes for ice fishing trips. I'm switching from the diesel to the gas powered motor because I think parts and service will be easier to find (in Canada), the additional power will be nice to have, and I won't be using it as a dd so the fuel consumption is largely inconsequential.

On a side note, I became more interested in the 90 series during a trip to Colombia earlier this year. The 90 series is very common there, as there was a plant in Colombia that produced it until well after it ceased production in Japan if I'm not mistaken. They were a common sight throughout the country, and that's what planted the thought in my head that the 90 may be a suitable replacement for my Surf!

I've been reading through threads on this site for a while, and I'm excited to learn even more about my new truck!!

Good choice Turbotwo. I bought mine new in 2000 and it has always been a rock solid reliable ride. Been a long time since 135000km

Thanks for the warm welcome! It seems common to see V6's with the TZ trim level in the Japanese auctions, maybe it's different in Australia?

The guy who's importing it for me recommended towing it to a shop in Japan for an assessment before shipping it overseas. Apparently parts and labour are cheaper in Japan, so if it needs any repairs it can be economical to have them done there. Is there anything I should have them specifically inspect or address?

I had one of these but in Australia with the V6 it was a VX spec. I thought TZ meant diesel too. How do you get one from Japan to Canada?

There are several companies in Canada that import used vehicles from Japan, as long as the vehicle is 15 years old you can import pretty much anything. This will be my 3rd imported vehicle.

Finally picked up my truck! I flew to Vancouver on Thursday, and picked it up Friday morning.
I had the shop in Japan replace the timing belt, water pump, and tensioners, as well as do an oil and coolant change.
I then had it towed from the port in Vancouver to a nearby shop where they did a more thorough inspection and replaced the front brakes, some bushings, and the battery.

I started driving it on Friday, and it exceeded my expectations. The interior is mint, I've never seen a 15 year old car interior in as nice shape. The vehicle drives very smoothly, and I was getting decent economy out of the V6. Driving through the mountains I was very happy I chose the V6 instead of the diesel. My 1kz Surf would have struggled mightily up some of the steep grades in the rockies, but the 3.4 tackled them quite easily.

Here's the only picture I took along the way:
