Hi all, first post here...
I have just joined the Prado Point forum. I am a new owner of an old '97 Prado 3.4 V6 here in the Philippines.
I purchased this old beast some 5 weeks ago. Basic overview: Dubai import , 110 000km on the clock, well maintained by local Philippine used vehicle standards. Personally, i love this thing. Prefer it to my 3.2 DID shogun back at home in UK!! Build quality is incomparable.
I will be performing a lot of service maintenance on this vehicle over the coming months in order to get it up to a very decent condition for long reliable road trips.
First issue which I have so far is as follows:
1. Cleaned MAF sensor (drives very smooth now)
2. Cleaned throttle body (had quite a layer of oil in it)
3. Replaced original fuel filter with aftermarket fuel filter
- It is impossible for me to get an original fuel filter 17mm/17mm screw type here in Philippines (even from Toyota dealership), therefore I had to use an alternative fuel filter. Used a filter 20% smaller than the original, with slide on connectors, rather than screw on. Therefore I had to cut the srew connectors from the original copper fuel lines.
I am experiencing the following issue now (maybe totally unrelated to my fuel filter mod):
1. When in PARK mode (on autobox), if I accelerate the engine hard with the accelerator pedal, the engine hesitates throughout the first 1000-3000rpm. However, if I accelerate the engine hard from the throttle body, I experience NO hesitation. (This happens when engine is hot or cold)
2. When in DRIVE, if I accelerate hard, I don't experience any hesitation at all
3. When in DRIVE and I switch to NEUTRAL (whilst coasting) if I accelerate hard, I also experience NO hesitation.
4. Furthermore, I heard a single load bang/knock from the rear part of the vehicle during hard acceleration with pedal in PARK mode. This seems to happen every time i perform this test.
I am a little bit confused as to what is going on. First thoughts were TPS. But before I start tinkering with anything else (and possibly breaking something), I would like some advise from the boffins on here who may be a little wiser.
Many thanks
M
