  • Fuel transfer between tanks

This is my second Prado, my first was a 1998 RV6, now I have a 2001 GXL.

In the RV6, whilst the main tank was in use any 'leftover' fuel from the pump was returned to the sub tank.
I guess this was to make you use the sub tank pump and keep it in working order and wet with fuel.

Now my GXL does not seem to operate this way.

So is there a fault, or is the 2001 model different in that respect?

I do fill the sub fairly often anyway ( in the GXL ) to make sure the fuel pump gets used, usually once a month or so.
Last week we ran it over 750 km between refills so the sub pump got a good workout that trip! lol.

Only a small portion of the return fuel is diverted to the sub tank when running on the main tank.
If all return fuel is diverted to the sub tank it will eventually overflow out the carbon canister vent, I have seen this occur when the switching solenoid/valve has malfunctioned.
