Hi just bought a toyota landcruiser prado 90-95 series 1999 model petrol and would like to know what the 2 buttons near the gear shift labelled P and 2 are for?

The P button is the electronic power button and will light up on your dash in green as PWR. It'll allow the engine to rev higher to gain more speed more quickly. Driving with it on will use a bit more fuel depending on how heavy your right foot is. Great for when pulling out onto a highway and you need to get up to speed fast. Or a good high revving acceleration off the lights. Doesn't hurt to excercise the motor through the rev range every now and again and also pump some large volumes of oil up to the top end in the process. Blow out some cob webs and get past the boring low 2200 rpm gear change when the button is not engaged.
The 2 button enables the transmission to hold 2nd gear. No benefit for on road use that I'm aware of, but I use it religiously when climbing hills in low range. I prefer not to use first and always press the "2nd" button so the car is in 2nd gear and stays there. Causes less or no wheel slip and you can control your acceleration much better on a rough incline. In 1st gear low on a rough incline with large rocks on it can cause jerky acceleration when you're bouncing around a bit. Kinder to the cv's if your car is lifted. In 2nd gear low you can walk the car up a steep hill at 1500 rpm nice slow and controlled. Good for water crossings too.
If you're referring to the 2nd start button it's great for sand as well... starting from stationary in 1st can 'dig in' whereas if you use the 2nd start button it blocks out 1st and starts in 2nd gear... it will allow it to go above 2nd but not below.
Cheers, Leon There's no such thing as a wrong turn... it's just the scenic route!
