  • Stock or not?

    G'day guys,

Can anyone tell me if my prado is stock height or if it's had a lift. I haven't had a look underneath yet because to be honest I know jack about suspension - first fourbie I've owned and I've had it a few months.

    I'll upload some pics here...

I'm starting to build her up.... Go the 90 Series haha... Got an ARB delux winch bar and safari snorkel on order.... just bought some shackles, snatch strap, recovery hooks, rubber matts etc... winch to come once I get the bar and bolt it on Exciting times.

On closer inspection of the pictures I’m assuming it’s an RV (sorry, its early), possibly the greatest Prado of all! It also has aftermarket sunraysia wheels and they are bigger than the standard rubbish. I did the same because it looked ridiculous with such a big gap between the top of the wheel and the arch.

If the tyres are the same or similar size to standard GXL (265 70/16) then I would say your Prado has stock suspension. These shots of my ex-90 series show similar clearance around the tyres. It had Polyairs in the back but otherwise factory standard suspension.

For what it is worth my opinion is that the 90s don't need a lift anywhere near as badly as the 120s do.

Cheers Michael - it does have the same size rubbers so having a look I'd say it's stock too. I didn't realise the stock ride height was so high. Nice!

Ninpo, If you give us the measurement shown in the pic I can tell you if it is standard or not. I'd say looking at the pics, it is standard but you would most likely find that it would sag once you loaded it up with your Bullbar/winch, and some camping gear or drawers in the back. It sitting good with just stock suspension if it is.

                    Distance is 28.5"....

The arb delux winch bar is coming in a few weeks - if the suspension is indeed stock, am I going to need to modify it to take the extra weight?

No you won't need to modify it, you may just notice that the added weight will make it sit abit lower.

I thought I could smell petrol!

Ninpo I should have said my 90 was fitted with a Team Poly bar and dual battery and these together would weigh less than an ARB steel bar. If you are planning on a winch and bar and dual batteries you will most likely need to compensate for the weight and go either a heavier or longer spring. At the rear I cannot recommend Polyairs highly enough, search and you will find a couple of threads about them. If you are not carrying heavy loads or a heavy drawer system then standard rear springs and Polyairs will cover most eventualities. My comment about 90s not needing a lift was to do with the basic difference in set up between the 90 and 120. A 90 has all its naughty bits nicely up out of the way between the chassis rails whereas the 120 hangs a bit loose!!! Park them side by side and you will see what I mean. I lifted the 120 about 50mm to get back the general clearance lost between models. My 90 had about 245mm under the sump guard while the 120 before lifting was only 205 ish, now 255 ish.

Remember the main thing is to enjoy the Prado experience, I know I have for about 8 years now.

Mmmmm looks like I'll be doing a bit more research and forking out a few more dollars then. Thanks for the advice...

My local camping store had a 20% - 50% off relocating sale... so I just bought a bloody swag, tent and very comy fold out chair.... haha. Least I can sit on my wallet now.
