It's the V6, the 90 series is the V6, the diesels are the 95 series. Dunno what the 2.7L four pot is.

Keen for your advice if you have any.

From what i know the short wheel base is the 90 series and the long wheel base is the 95 series. When i changed the oil filter i jacked up the front and got to it underneath hope this helps, you dont need to remove the bashplate.

Not sure where you got that pearl of wisdom but 95 series are all engine varieties, check the Redbook. In fact there are very few 90 series in this country except grey imports. In fact the model is incorrectly represented in this website and it should be corrected.[/quote]

I have 1999 V6 3.4L. I bought a oil filter tool that fits over the outer end of the filter (from Supacheap, I think, but fairly common tool I believe). The tool is like two halves of a cylinder that tighten over and around the filter in the direction of removal (anticlockwise) as the rachet spanner driver on the outer end is used.

I stand on a small step near left hand front wheel reaching with difficulty to the filter near the alternator. The removal tool and rachet spanner driver will fit into space there. Only small movements of the rachet spanner are achieveable (and I use a small one) until the filter is loose enough for hand turning.

Once hand loosened, I use a rag to hold the hot filter and turn it facing up to stop further spillage of oil while I steer it upwards through the spaces in the engine bay.

I only use my hands to tighten any new filters.

                  dont remove bash plate

Hi Porl.Slide under front of 4b head first laying on your back. The second good look you get at the filter is the hole you stick your left arm up,behind the crossmember not in front.Wipe it clean for grip and rotate anticlockwise. If it is to tight you need a regular screwdriver long enough;about 14-15inches and place the edge against the front lip of the filter at about 5 oclock and tap firmly with a hammer. The filter steel is soft and will dent easily, you should now be able to tap it loose, then back to the left arm trick and remove.PS expect to take abit of an oil bath dow the left arm.Remove the filter through the hole in front othe crossmember ,its not as tricky as behind. To replace clean the block ,lube the rubber seal and only hand tighten with the left hand trick as mutch as your hand will let you;I do this and it does not leak it then comes off without the screw driver.Ps this system may require a smaller arm than yours .good luck......

I take the filler out from the top. I wouldn't want all that warm oil running down my arm!

                      Carrots idea has merrit.

Porl, just gave carrots idea a go and it seems to have merrit if you have a tool. I dont and I still can only get a good grip with my left hand not my right.I will now look for a tool and call this my carrot tool.PS Carrot;I let the engine cool down first.

If none of the mentioned methods of loosening the oil filter work for you, just stick the screwdriver straight through the filter!

PS Carrot;I let the engine cool down first.
I like to do the change warm, so the oil is less viscous. I think that helps get more of the old oil out. (I don't use an oil flush.)

                          each to his own.

When you get the dam thing off Porl;Do not over tighten when replacing, this is what makes it hard to remove.1 and1quater turns is enough.Hay Carrot, what about my problem!

Huh? What problem? ..... you mean not being able to loosen the filter from above? :?

I don't think I've had that problem before, but if you have to loosen it from below that's fine, just loosen it from below then unscrew and remove it from above! 8)

I do have one of those filter wrench thinymajigs (not like watsea's), but I don't remember if I needed to use it on the prado before.
