    Hi,
    I have had similar problems with my 2001 gxl. It is important to keep the mass air flow sensor clean, and you can buy a spray to do this. just undo two screws, pop out the sensor and spray it, as per directions. hope this helps. I also try and use premium fuel where posiible.

          I replaced my air flow sensor and it made a huge difference. The error does not come up when checking the ecu for faults. I bit the bullet and purchased a new one and you could tell the minute I drove down the street with the new sensor.
          '00 GXL V6, ARB winch bar, Safari Snorkel, Unichip, BFG ATR 265/75/16, dual battery system, UHF, homemade rear drawers (and a heap of other things planned!).

            I unplugged mine and drove around for a week without it. Didn't make an ounce of difference. Can someone explain that? :?

              So does this general happen around any specific kms or dependant on the amount of dusty roads you drive on? Is it something that should be checked regularly?

                Think MAS just accumulate stuff on them over time. I clean mine at every service with CRC CO Contact cleaner, this has stopped all the associated problems encountered if MAS is dirty. For some reason there are so many little things that happen if MAS is sending wrong messages to ecu. ie surging, hunting for gears in auto, shudders, continual fast idle, hard starting.
                I run an oiled foam filter now which is ment to allow higher airflow rate. Not sure if this affects how dirty MAS gets, as foam filter seems to trap more crap in it than original paper element. If you want to maintain good preformance, keep MAS and air filter clean.

                  When i bought my car about a month ago it had a similar problem of no power at low revs. I took it to toyota and they ran an injecter test/clean and flushed fuel lines and its working better a lot better now. Cost me $127 which i though was pretty good value

                    The Air flow meter is a common one on the 90 series prado.

                    My friends workshop had a 2001 prado glx come in complaining of the same thing. Lack of power and misfiring around 3000rpm.
                    Toyota couldnt find a fault because toyota relied on reading codes.

                    lucky for me because of this great forum and this thread I excitedly jumped up and down telling him.
                    Wacked another one in and good as gold.

                    Customer was sooooo happy.

                      had trouble with our 2000 3.4 prado

                      i have had power problems with our prado as well has a miss when it is hot but only when you stop it after a small drive and start it up after 5 min it misses have replaced plugs leads coil packs injectors cleaned any ideas people please and done a compression check too all good at 200psi

                        i had similar issues for a while. Then one day after a 4wd trip cleaned her up at a car wash, then it would'd start again and had RACV tow me to my Mechanic and in the end the Alternator wasn't charging the battery so had to get a new one, the old one had been in there for about 14 years so it had a good run i guess. But yeh my problem was the alternator. But i have also experienced the engine kind of revving by itself at a stand still..
