  • changing from v6 to diesel

Have been thinking if a change fom my 260km auto98 model v6 to a late model 2002 90series diesel would be a good move.I may be able to buy the above model [120km auto TX ] for a trade value [price unknown at moment] when a friend upgrades to a new 150 shorty.
I'm wondering have anyone here done similar and their thoughts/impressions of a similar change.I always intended to step into a late model d4d 120 but at the asking price i am thinking would i be better saving the $ on another 90s and transferring some of my extras and saving the dollars and then the wife can get her VW that she wants. The v6 has been fantastic and never presented a problem and i would expect to get at least another 100km out of her and but would also expect to get good service from a diesel. As the prado only comes out on weekends and trips [have ute for work] it does not do much so the big dollars on near new are hard to justify and this maybe a good way to get into a newer diesel.
    look forward to your feedback
    Russ

Re: changing from v6 to diesel

i have done a similar thing rags, except it was 4runner to prado, i had a rv6 runner, it was a good 4wd, had a lift and wheel and a bit done to it, i found it was getting a bit long in the tooth, it only had 230km when i got rid of it but the bodywas starting to rust and paint was faiding a bit, i was mechaically good just the body was gettun shabby, after all it was a 93 model, fuel economy was like me, it likes a drink  430km on the hwy from full till empty, i traded it and bought my 03gx diesel 120, and never looked back, the prado was more comfy but going from a v6 to diesel was a good thing if ya ask me, yeah it needs twice the servicing but i should get twice the life out of the motor if i look after it, as for performance, the prado is not as good off the mark and around town but when you r towing it is a better vehicle, more torque and offroad i was very impressed. what suprised me the most was how well it went on the beach, i was used to old diesel that had to be flogged to get anywhere and with the prado even though its the 1kz it just goes really well, fuel economy is also a lot better, i get around 1300km out full till fuel light comes on, even more when roof rack is off, so in my opinon its a good thing, balls in your court. cheers samo

Have you considered other brands? (ie Pajero?)

I know that's almost a swear word on this forum, but while the Pajero's have reasonable re-sale values, they don't hold the values of a Prado so you may find that you could get a newer vehicle with less km's - something like an NP or NS Pajero - for the same price.

      Food for thought.

I think you may be shocked at the power difference after coming from the v6 to the older Prado diesel.
The Pajero advice is good IMO. The NM, NP, and NS may all be in your price range, and have a much better performing diesel engine than the Prado of that era.

Best of luck, whichever way you go.

Re: changing from v6 to diesel

I have done exacty that. I had a 97 grande V6 and now have 01 grande (same shape 90 series). The V6 was a great car and motor never gave an ounce of trouble except when I went to LPG but thats another story. I have found not a huge difference in economy on the freeway (V6 12.2L per 100, T/D 10.2) (city 17.2L per 100, T/D 13.2) Im impressed off the mark I think is quit quick (would like to line it up against the V6) Pulls 110 up the mooney mooney with overdrive out (same as V6) and up the hawksbury no problems but start pushing it 120/130 and it will match the petrol in economy. I wouldnt buy a 120 series with the 1kz (engine code for T/D) personally vehicle is too heavy but the D4D a ripper but still big $$$. I think where the diesel would be very noticable in the torque department is when towing. You can add a DP chip and torque it up to 398nm's big difference (thats next on the list). Not sure where your located but your welcome to come and have a drive of it to see if you like the T/D or not, the only thing I find is on Stockton beach it will pull fine through the sand (can feel the torque) but when wanting to get a run up for some of the big dunes the V6 was better as it would rev harder and give you the speed a lot quicker but overall am very happy with it, dont drive a D4D you wont want to get back into a 1KZ, would be like going from a 1kz back into a 2.8D hilux LOL, Regards Steve

Re: changing from v6 to diesel

Thanks for the replies so far
I have looked at the pajeros and triton but figure after 12 years of prado ownership i will say it has been the best motor car i have owned and figure why change and then be kicked of this great forum.
The issue of performance difference is one thing that does concern me with the 1kz v v6.
Steve your experience is what i was looking for.As i have driven a D4D and loved it i figure if i was to go older diesel i would probably chip it to at least get something similar in performance.Your experience on the F3 hill was also worthy as we do live at the very top of KURRAJONG hEIGHTS [not far from you] and drive up Bell Bird hill and then our rd which is steeper again. The prado is currently mainly used for weekend drives, towing the jayco finch on trips and trips to the inlaws on the qld sunshine coast and sits in the shed the rest of the time.
The thinking about upgrading has come about as the no2 daughter will be soon getting her license and we intend to past down wifes corolla to her and i always thought that wife could drive a new prado as her daily driver but she is not keen on that and particully if i mod it like found on this site and she would prefer to get a new VW TDI Tiguan and i look at upgrading the prado to a not as dear diesel and maybe this TX as mentioned.
                cheers
