  • Did I get a good buy?

    Hi,
I have watching prices of Prados since I bought my sig 90. I paid $17990 (18K) and it had 126KKm.

Did I get a good deal or was I had?

Re: Did I get a good buy?

I agree with above. Stop looking at prices...... it will do you no good. Think of it this way...... a little bit more you spent could save you many thousands in repairs. Not only engine, a vehicle with low kms as you have, may cost you heaps less over the long term in suspension, drive-line etc costs.

The 90 is a great vehicle. Enjoy!

If you think of it in terms of the previous owner(s) averaged less than 10k a year then I think it would probably be a great buy. I guess my thoughts with a vehicle of that age with the low ks is it may have been a touring vehicie. Assuming your avatar is the vehicle then it dosn't show it covered in steel so it was probably road touring. The "rich" people I know who can afford a vehicle that is just for touring/trips tend to look after these and have regular service/maintenance performed to keep them in top notch condition.

Re: Did I get a good buy?

I think it was very much a car used by a soccer mum, it has never even had a tow bar fitted.

While I would have preferred the manual, this is the best car I have ever driven.

I have a wish list of mods that I plan have done eventually. I estimate, I would need about $10K for it, so I'm going to take it slowly and start with the tow bar.

@Schaffer, Yeah the Prado in my avatar is the one. The Dealer I bought it from said it was traded in to a Mercedes dealer.

Like has been said you have bought the key to adventure and it's yours to do what you want with it and take it wherever. You have bought a lifestyle!

Would be a great machine with a nice bullbar! enjoy

Hmmmmm, a clean skin Prado, where do we start for the mods, but firstly, the price you paid is premium, however, you actually have a very good vehicle, The first thing you should do is give it an engine flush and some oil changes every 5000k, for the next 20000k, this is because it is a low k vehicle, there could be some sludge build up in the engine due to lack of use or lots of short trips, and don't use cheap oil either, same with the diffs and transfer case, and give the auto a service as soon as you can too, change the spark plugs to iridium ones and take it for some long drives. Now back to the mods, a good EFS 2 inch kit will be awesome, as well as some MT tyres, this will give you a good weekend warrior, then as you get more money and more confident, get a bull bar with winch, good quality spot lights, custom rear bar and rock sliders, then maybe F & R diff locks.
                  Happy motoring

Re: Did I get a good buy?

Nice suggestions but does one really need to jump into a pair of M/T shoes straight up. M/T's will effect on-road driving and fuel economy (albeit slightly). I have GY Wrangler AT/SA's on my 90 and they have got me through some great tracks so far. I will be looking at a second set of rims with M/T's fitted to put on the vehicle (in the comfort of my own garage) when I plan to hit the trails and the A/T's will remain on the vehicle for day-to-day and adhoc trips.

Personnally, along with the shoes, I'd be adding the bullbar as one of the first mods as well as a UHF and a basic recovery kit (the winch could wait so long as you drive in the company of others). At least the bullbar is there as protection on those slippery slops that may steer you towards trees or other "obsticals" as well as protection from (in my situation) Canberra Drivers. ...And the UHF might just save you an unplanned night in the bush should anything happen. I definately agree with the lift though, that is something I have very high on my list but alas it will come down to available $$$ (just spent a small fortune on ARB Compressor, new recovery kit, GPS and other minor bits 'n' bobs). I plan to break it to the lil' lady as "the shocks are in need of replacement, it's a safety thing as it effects the breaking so we shouldn't put it off. I've done a little research and the lift kit works out to be very close on price with the standard suspension so we may as well get it done". Hopefully that will get the nod from the Minister for War and Finance. That and with the lift (or roof cage, whichever comes first) it will no longer fit into our garage due to the angle of the driveway leading in so this means she gets more space to park her car and the Harley can move over which works in her favour ... or so I'll try make it appear :P

   So I'm not the only one who thinks like that.

I guess the big question is does it work for you? My wife seems to have cottoned onto my ... methodology. Bloody university educated women - too bloody smart for her own good!

Re: Did I get a good buy?

It works but the trick is to use this technique sparingly!

I wanted a new flat panel computer monitor (albeit a few years ago) to replace my 21 inch CRT. I "sold" that to her as an energy saving

Whilst I am still saving the $$$ for them, she is onboard with getting rear drawers and a 1/2 cargo barrier. This idea was "sold" as a safety aspect to secure item such as tools and-the-like that would be dangerous (especially with a 14 month old in the back) should we encounter a bad stretch off road or even an on road accident.

A new recovery kit ... I just took her for a drive to a "muddy" stretch and commented that this could be bad news if we get stuck. Only way out would be a passer by with a recovery kit of their own (this also justified the UHF funnily enough). So I went and got my new ARB kit.

The above point and teaching her about off road driving has actually let her to suggest a winch ... BONUS :!:

Again, this is a power that must not be abused but used sparingly if all other options for modifications and upgrades WILL fail! Do not use this as a last resort AFTER all other attempts have failed as she will certainly catch on and consider it an "excuse". This must be OPTION 1 of the justification cycle :P The other trick is to make sure she sees how it will benefit HER. A little more thought required but will pay off with bigger items. If you have a young child / children ... their safety is the altimate justification for just about anything

Hell i'm glad my wife doesn't use the computer or read forums like these HA HA
