  • Guidance on a 2001 Prado?

    Greetings from lovely Cyprus,

I have lived in the Middle East since 1998 and have longed for a Landcruiser since just about Day #1. Seems my hunt is nearly over and I'd love some insights about the two trucks I've narrowed it down to:

My use will be light in 4X4 and there may be a boat to tow in the distant future.  We would be using it to haul 6 passengers mostly throughout the Island. Alot of driving is in the city, so automatic would be nice, but not crucial. I want to go almost anywhere, whereas a lame mini-van would leave me always wondering "Where does that go?"  I am gentle on cars and get things fixed the expensive way.

Both Trucks are at the same dealer (he's got two others, but they are quite bad in condition). The first truck, Gold Automatic, is 500 Euros more. Both vehicles have the tan interiors and the dealer has told me I can free swap from one to the other to get the 'cleanest' interior.  Dealer will also let me take the part for the adjustable headlights from a third Cruiser, as both of these are missing this feature.

    1. 11,500 Euro Gold 2001 Automatic GX with no diff lock that I can find (maybe its one of the automatically selecting options.  Interior the best of the two.  Missing button for adjustable headlights.  This car has had a front end collision, but it appears the engine hasn't been hit.  The bumper, headlights, radiator, radiator fan and other front-end parts have all been replaced. Oil looked good and no drips of oil below. I believe they painted the entire vehicle as I see a small amount of paint splash on the passenger's door (RHD) near the window. In addition to the collision there is also 12000 km's on the Odometer, which is very, very wrong. Dealer supposedly doesn't know how this came about.  Serial number wise this is the newer of the two trucks, but about 4000 vehicles. I can't seem to look up the VIN anywhere JTEBY99J800169051 - but maybe because it was sold in Cyprus.

    2. 11,000 Euro Green 2001 GX Manual with diff lock knob.  This seems to be the normal Cruiser, although it had sat so long at the dealers that the battery was dead.  It started, without a moments hesitation when we jumped it.  The interior is quite a bit worse as it was a smoker's vehicle and seems he liked to drive with the windows down. When I pulled the dipstick I had to double check as there is only 1 mm of oil in showing. Also here, I can't seem to look up the VIN anywhere JTEBY99J500168855

The Gold is 11500 Euro and the Green is 11000 Euro, which would leave a couple of thousand for some improvements or maintenance.

Please share your thoughts and which one you would get...

    Many thanks,

    Mike

Mike, keep looking, both sound suspect and may cause you grief.
