Hi to all 4x4 gurus,

Recently I can clearly hear the irritating sound (like whistle sound) from inside my Prado Tz. I have checked the gearbox and engine at experinced workshop but they claimed that my prado was in excellent condition.

I still dont give up and decide to have a check on my own. I have checked all the plastic hooks and dashboard as well as all the possible part inside the car for loosen screws or nuts. But till the end I could not even find the source of noise.

The noise irritating sound can be heard whenever the car RPM increase to between 1500 - 2000. Below or beyond this range the sound is disappeared any way. It may not cause any harm to my car (I guess) as I used to drive the car with the sound for more than 15,000 km and it seems no major failure to the car components. So I guess the sound may be just caused by some part in the car due to vibration (there is no such sound from outside the car).

I have recorded the sound and posted it here (pls refer to attachment), hoping some gurus may be experinced or familiar with this irritating sound. I found it very annoying when driving along with this noise. Please dont mind to give your advice so I may solve this problem asap.

I have the same noise as well, it comes on when i tap on the accelerator and goes off after 2K rpms. i suspect it might be the ABS or brake pump. It seemed to go off on its own after a while of usage. I narrowed down the noise to be brake related as i the noise came back on after i topped up the brake fluid. I'm not sure if its any serious issue, but my car still brakes fine. :mrgreen:

A known occurence with the 1 KZTE engine is the fuel return spring weakens after a while and causes a sound that has been described as either a whistle or a droning noise, the noise appears to come from the passenger footwell.
The fix is very simple, the fuel return banjo bolt has to be undone and under the bolt there is a spring that holds down a ball bearing.
The spring looks like a ballpoint pen spring and you need to stretch it so that it is about 6mm longer.
Refit it and your noise should be gone. I had that noise for about 5 years and I was resigned to the fact that I couldn't find it, I had tried everything listening to all bearings with a screwdriver etc.

Hi Bounder. My annoying sound comes from the passenger seat. Can't quite pick it but much like a whining diff kinda sound. Anyone able to help me out with this one?

Is it the diesel?
If so its worth doing the spring mod on the fuel pump.
Takes 5 minutes with a 14mm AND 11MM spannerS. At least then you could rule it out.
It is the tall fitting with the rubber pipe coming out at 5 o'clock.
Hold the base with the 14mm and the nut is 11 IIRC.
Don't drop the copper sealing washers.

Diff noise :shock: I hope you have done regular changes of the front diff oil, it holds just over a litre and the oil breaks down quick.
I would check that as well. Mine lunched itself a month or so ago and it wasn't a good scene.

I had an annoying noise from around the gearbox area (sounded like it) and I thought maybe a bearing was dying. It was intermitant (somedays it didnt do it) and I tracked it down to the return spring (cant find the part number but its a denso part from memory).

I am having a very similar noise coming from the mid-left side of engine compartment. I can only hear it from the cabin, and not from outside. The noise seems to be the strongest only when the engine is cold. Once it warms up, it goes away or is so soft that you don't really notice it.

In Toyota service, where I replaced all 4 injectors recently, they told me it was a regular turbo whistle, and that it's ok. I know what the normal turbo whistle is as it is my 3rd diesel LC, and it's a bullshit. It is most probably not turbo.

I am wondering if the fuel return spring is the same on 1KZ and 1KD engines. Mine is LC120 D4D, which had 1KD engine. Do you know if my type of engine might have this fuel return spring problem as well?

Just do it. You don't need to replace it, just stretch the spring by hand about 1-2mm. 5 mins, zero cost, nothing to lose
