  • Homemade bullbar

    Hi All,
    Have any of you guys build your own bullbar. I have started and are nearly finished.

        All metal was offcuts, so it was free. The grinding disks, undercoat, spotlights and bolts worked out R600 (+/- USD$85). I used our companies CO2 welder. I must still finish off the piping to the side of the bullbar.

              Thanks all. The only thing it did take a lot of ... is time. When I'm finished I don't know if I must powder coat or epoxy coat it? In epoxy I can only find gloss black, were I would like to have matt black or even a satin black.

                Satin Black is the choise of manufacturers as it can easerly be colour matched if you get stone chips or scratches. All paint suppliers have this colour and they are all exactly the same, unlike other colours.

                  More pictures of my homemade bullbar. Did help with a recovery of two Nissan Hardbodies (NP300) and the bullbar did its job.

                    Just wondering if your Prado has airbags? If so how did you make sure the bullbar doesn't intefere with the sensors?

                      It does have airbags. I had a look at many bullbars that are so called "airbag safe". I cant say mine will or will not interfere with my airbags... yet. A lot of my design were it bolts onto the chassis came off the TJM one's.

                      I'm thinking of putting in a switch for when I'm off roading. That's the only time it can activate when I don't want it to.

                      Any other suggestions???

                          I'll have to leave that up to the engineering types on here, not my area of expertise unfortunately. I was just curious as when I was choosing bullbars there were ones I liked that I couldn't have due to the airbag issue (i.e. ARB Sahara bar).

                            Here in South Africa we don't have any laws on bullbars yet. Regarding the switching off of an airbag, as far as I know there are also no law here regarding that. I know some guys that did that for when they go on 4x4 tracks or serious offroading.

                            When I started designing the bullbar I thought about the airbag situation a lot, because I would still want it to work the way it should. One thing I also put in my design is that all the panels of the bullbar are separate and not all welded together like other bullbars. They are all held together by 6mm mild steel bolts. So in case of an accident I thought they will sheer off and that motion will also serve as a cushion section. The 2 recovery points are directly onto the chassis. Why I also did the bullbar in panels is for in case I damage a section then I only need to fix or rebuild that section.
