  • What new all terrain tyres to buy?

    Hi all
This is my first time on the forum so sorry for any hiccups.
I'm looking for some new mid priced all terrain (light truck) tyres for my 90series. I have been using BFG KOs but am looking for something a bit cheaper.
I amthinking bridgestone LT 697s but have heard a feww bad reports. Any thoughts?
Another possibility might be Maxxis 980s.
I am not too concerned about relative aggressiveness of tread patterns, more about how well they wear, balance, noiselevels etc.
Any genuine comments would be welcome
Derf, 90series diesel auto, toughdog susp, snorkel etc etc.

I've just changed from BFG to maxxis on the work ute, not sure which ones they are, but they are shocking. At 80 km they're noisy as, heaps noisier than the BFs, lucky I don't drive it too much as it drives me nuts. Depends what you want to do with the vehicles. The only tyre incidents at the gtg were 697 and maxxis, more traction with the bfg.
      150 with stuff bolted on!

Cheaper at the start doesn't necessarily mean cheaper in the long run. I'm pretty sure the bfg's tick all the boxes for what your looking for in a tyre . Good wear, not to noisy plus the slightly more aggressive tread is a bonus when your off road. Might be a bit more expensive to start with but they are a tried and tested tyre. That said the hankook dynapro rf10 might be an option you haven't looked at . Seem to have good reviews. Any way good luck with your choice...

I've had Yokohama Geolanders on mine for a few years now and would get them again but the dealer i'm going through doesn't sell them. So i will get, and am happy to go with, the D697's this time

          Cheers

With the best tyres (bfg at) under $300 a tyre, how much cheaper are you looking for?
            Not worth the compromise IMO.

All of our work cars run Bridgestone Duelers.
They are quiet and comfortable. Never heard of one blowing.
IMHO 1st choice is BFG AT's 2nd choice would be the Duelers.

Have had BF's on last two prado's, hilux and 2 vitara's prior to that, current prado I went with 697's. Personally reckon they are heaps better in the wet over the BF's which I found very skittish in the wet but was always me driving and the wife very rarely drove it at the time, I didn't like my wife with our 6 year old driving on them when she did take it. They were great off road never had a puncture BUT were totally useless at the slightest bit of mud/clay. I know there not a mud tyre but Im comparing what I had to the 697's I have now and the 697's personally I think are better all round. I don't think they will last as long I'm sure. The bf's certainly gave me good klms well over 70 thou but I'm certain I wont get that with 697's. Probably a tad quitter then the Bf's. Yoko's give you a great warranty and I believe are quitter then the 697's or the Bf's, well my neighbours were on his pajero anyway. Cheers Steve

I've run both cooper atr, Bridgey 697s, Goodyear wrangler and Mickey mtzs over the years... My opinion the BFG all terrains which I have now are the best tyre than the others.. Quiet, grippy, tough and look the best. IMHO...

I have 2 prados, one with 697's one with bfg a/t both sets new. Bfg at quiet. 697's have more noise.
I can't get the bfg or 697's to slide in the wet driving a bit faster than I should be asking of them.
IMO the bfg are far superior offroad traction to 697.
697 look nice, drive well, probably better on road traction.

I've got Continental Cross Contact ATs. Not too noisy and fairly chunky tread. Not a LT tyre though. Wife wouldn't let me get BFG

                        #### I had absolutely no problems with the bf's wanting to not grip and that's just steady driving and where I live there's not a straight road in the joint. Some cambered the wrong way which doesn't help but comparing to the 697's I'm running now I can tell a big difference. Both tyres will lose traction if pushed no doubt about that but it takes quit a bit more for the 697's to want to start being skittish, just what I have found comparing both. Off road can't say I've noticed any major considerable difference as the 697's have quit a chunky tread remembering I'm talking there LT not there standard AT (not LT). I've had them both in the mud and the 697's clear heaps better then the bf's ever did, again I know there not a mud tyre but comparing two A/T's. Either way personally I don't think you could go wrong with either tyres.... Cheers Steve

Steve, roger that, maybe the bfg's were older than mine & I think they changed the compound in recent years.
I've only run bfg a/t for 18months, so don't know what older ones were like. I'm just saying about new tyres this year.
I'm not doubting your experience if that's what you thought, I just stating my very recent test results & what I have seen on the tracks for years.

IMO the other GREAT a/t is a Mickey STZ they are excellent all round as well.
I think of them as a newer design bfg a/t nice pattern, very quiet & grippy on road, very good on rocky hills like bfg a/t
But like bfg a/t in mud not so good, but there's a right foot for that.
They cost more, a lot more, but they last very well to compensate.
Also available in 265/70 17 since the last 16 months or so.

So how much cheaper than $290 a do you want derf?

Na mate all good. Didn't take offence to your comment. As you said every one has their own experience with the same brand things...bit like Nissan, Toyota etc lol. What your happy to pay and our own personal experience is what we all go by. Like cameras and things, some love cannon others love Minolta etc.... All really comes down to $$$ and personal preference.... Cheers Steve

If thats important stick with top quality stuff. You cant really go wrong.

I am about to replace my Goodyear Silent Armors. Tough, quiet and quality. Not very aggressive. Not cheap.
