Media beat-up is a completly different topic we probably shouldn't go there.

I agree with Sunday. I have STT's and find them to be a good tyre (only had them for 20k or so with minimal wear)

A mate has S/Ts and hates them, says they have a no grip (in wet conditions) and wouldn't get them again.

Each to there own really. Some ppl swear by em, others have done it and won't go back. Same can be said for tough dog products.

IMO it all depends on the type of tyres and how they are maintained. I had Cooper H/T's on my old Prado and had 2 different sidewall blowout situations within the first 10000km of use. Thankfully they were both covered under waranty after several arguments. On the other hand my mums 120 has had cooper ATR's on it for 3yrs now and have done 50000km and are still going strong with 25% tread and no sidewall failures.

              Re: Coopers Not looking Good????

Had a set of coopers on my previous toyota - Brought them 'cause "I needed" some real classy tyres. What a disaster! I couldn't get rid of steering shimmy no matter what I did with the wheels. After the 4th trip back to the dealer for yet another wheel balance and change around he made the statement "I am not prepared to go any further with this matter!" How's that for dealer backup. I insisted on him checking for out of round and yup you guessed it - the whole four were going off! We came to an arrangement in the end which saw me driving away on a new set of Khumo tyres. Not half bad they were either. I wouldn't buy another set of Coopers after that carry on.

Can't say that's a fair comparison... a 3t 79 series as a work vehicle and all the abuse it would see compared to a Prado and it's touring/4wding duties.
Fair enough you like the BFG's... and that's a valid opinion but apples with apples huh

It looks like tyres are like women

You love them or you hate them

Or you love them and you leave them

Or you just put up with them even though they are a little out of balance

                        Re: Coopers Not looking Good????

I wouldnt buy any other tyre. 75 Series tyres give 11mm more tread which equates to 120K on a set of tyres.

                          Re: Coopers Not looking Good????

In reply to the comment just above this one, I had never heard of sidewalls blowing out in my life until I started getting interested in wanting to buy Cooper Tyres. I had owned a set of Pirelli Scorpion STR's previously and had driven them in harsh terrain of all types. I must admit they performed well on gravel and sand. They got me up and down steep 4wd hills with minimal fuss. They don't like mud or wet grass though. I got 80,000km out of each set. I drove them on harsh rocky terrain, sraped the sidewalls on rocks many times, drove on them at all different pressures, and the only issues I had with them was punctures from screws being left on the ground occassionally where I work.

I had my heart set on getting Cooper ST's or STT's for a long time and nothing was going to change that. I saw them on Roothy's 4wd DVD's, in 4wd magazines, and basically fell in love with them. With different tyre manufacturers I phoned and spoke to when asking for prices and for product info, which included Beaurepairs, Tyre Power, K-Mart Tyre & Auto, Bob Jane's and two independant tyre suppliers, I was warned away from Cooper ST's, STC's and STT's by all of the companies. I was told about the lugs breaking off on STT's, ST's, STC's and STT's chipping out easily, that Cooper's are a cheap tyre in the US and thus are made to the quality of a cheap tyre, but when sold in Australia they market them to be an expensive high quality, well respected 4wd tyre. I was told about sidewalls blowing out, especially with STT's on rough terrain or when the pressures are let down in them. I had an independant tell me he used to sell them, but he said the STT's werent covered with a warranty when used off-road and it caused problems between him and clients when tyres were being returned due to very premature wearing/failure, which included seperation of tread to sidewall, combined with the fact that Cooper themselves would stiff him over warranty returns and he was always caught in the middle. He told me not to touch them because when you have a specific 4wd tyre being returned by consumers more than any other brand he sold, and not having the manufacturer back them with a warranty for replacement and basically didn't want to know about the issues, it made his business look bad, so he stopped ordering them period. He told me of one long term client he's got who bought 4 sets of Cooper ST and STT tyres through him and was extremely happy with them up until the 4th set where 3 of the 4 STT tyres started to fall apart on him after 5,000km, and to top it off, Cooper didn't even want to know about it and wouldn't cover him with a warranty. He replaced them with BFG's and is still on his current set as he bought them off this guy a few months ago. He recommended Goodyear Wranglers to me instead, as did a Beaurepairs store manager. To be told that information about Cooper's from everyone I called or spoke to in person, made my mind up even though I loved them before getting them. I decided to go with the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac's instead through Beaurepairs because they were selling them $40 cheaper a tyre than everyone else at the time. I've only done 500km on them so far so cannot comment personally yet on reliability and longevity. But I was happy with the info I was told by the people in the know. This Beaurepairs store previously mentioned sells more Wrangler Duratrac tyres than any other 4wd tyre and that Goodyear has trouble keeping up with demand in Australia as their tyres are made in the US. He also told me I should get an extra 30,000km out of my Duratrac's than Cooper STT tyres. After hearing that info over the period of a couple of weeks from different tyre retailers, my mind was made up. I've only ever known one person with a set of Coopers on their car, they were ST's on a Jackaroo and they were very happy with them. I've never owned Coopers, and never will after hearing what I've heard, or read. That's my personal opinion if it's of any help to anyone looking at buying new tyres for their 4wd after what I've been told, and I sincerely apologize to any who does own them and have been really happy with them and how they performed. I just help but say, the constant and alarming trend of horror stories are a cause for concern.

                              Hi Brett1979,

Its the same as the Nissan V's Toyota argument...... I will only listen to people who have actually used something....... hearsay, is nothing but that. You don't know someones motivation for bagging another product, especially if they make a commission from selling it.
Personally, I'm on my 4th set of Coopers on 3 different Toyotas..... and I wouldn't buy anything else, but equally my mates with BFG's have no complaints and wouldn't buy anything else either. If your happy with your Duratrac, then they are the tyre for you.
