There is some threads existing with details of people who have had engineers certificates done to allow larger tyres. It would pay to have a snoop thru them to see if any info can be gathered?

If your tyres are rubbing then no-one will legalise it..

I totally sympathize with your situation as I have General Grabber AT 2 265/70R16 on my 90 series. Although they have quite an aggressive tread pattern on them not unlike the BFG all terrains they are not LT construction. They served us well through the middle of the Strzelecki Desert and part of the Simpson and also on a muddy , slippery Birdsville track. The vulnerability of the side walls concerns me ( They were side wall staked once on this trip). I have like yourself searched the mud and all terrain tyres and they seem to be all in the 75 profile apart from the Bridgestone Dueler which has LT construction but not a very aggressive tread pattern. It seems if you want upgrade to a more suitable ,robust tyre you have no choice but to exceed legal size ( only by 15 mm or about 4%). I put this to someone in a well known 4wd shop and he admitted that people just do it and as long as it is not a grossly obvious oversized tyre then relevant parties will probably not notice. This is not a terribly satisfactory situation but it seems to be unavoidable if you want better functioning tyres

Not all 265/75/16 tyres are the same, the ORD is different in all makes, there is no Australian STD that stipulates the a specific tyre size has "X" ORD.

So are you saying therefore Crooza that the distinction between the 75 and 70 profiles is a bit blurred in terms of tyre diameter and you may get away with it?

In theory, as of 1st July, the standards in QLD are being changed to match the rest of Australia: a total of 50mm lift maximum: Thus you can go the extra tyre size, but as long as the total of Tyres, Springs, etc is not greater than 50mm, you are OK.

What i'm saying is there is no standard that says a 265/75/16 tyre must have a rolling diameter of "X", so in theroy, a 265/70/16 can have a larger rolling diameter than a 265/75/16 depending on the tyre manufacturer.

Unfortunately all indications are that this will not happen and has been deferred yet again.

While there is no offical Standard for rolling diameters of tyres I believe that the simple equation of a 5% increase in profile (70 => 75) for a 265 section tyre will result in an increase in diameter of more than 15 mm, therefore is technically illegal. The actual tyre diameter of different brands will I believe be of no concern as 265/70/16 to 265/75/16 results in more than a 15 mm increase.

Do I think it will be an issue, no I don't but you roll the dice and take the chance.

Put in the 265/70/16 and then compare with a 267/75/16, I got an overall diference of 13.25mm

I think you are right Leethal. I had a long conversation several days ago with someone from the modifications section of QT and he indicated that any change to adopt national standards may be some time away and would not hazard an estimate of which year. It seems a significant number of offroaders have rolled the dice as you say and taken their chances.

For me there is no option as the LT All terrains and mud terrain tyres all come in a higher profile . There is only a Bridgestone Dueler in LT construction and I am not impressed by its tread pattern ie it may be a big step backwards in grip

You get a slight increase in clearence, but the main reason is, you have better (safer tyres), which gives you better offroad-ability.
