Who is thinking of the boggy hole trip from WA?

If we go as a group I would be interested, camper trailer and all.

If not I will go with the flow.

In my reply to Mav I indicated that I'd be interested in the Boggy Hole trip if I could find someone who wasn't going to take my trailer to the next camp. But if Boggy Hole is "trailerable" and others are taking trailers I'll take mine.

What sort of trailers do you guys all have? I know Russ has the Camprite.
Im still sorting my camper trailer, so this could impact my decision. For example If we do 'Boggy Hole' it would rule out the pop up trailers.

Im hoping to go to the camping show at Claremont before I decide.

I replied to Leachy's email on the GTG emails sent out, but of course then I logged on and read his posting
here, so I thought I'd put up some info for others to read as well................

In previous trips through the centre, I've done the run around the Mereenie Loop, and I've also done the run
down to Boggy Hole. If I've got my understanding right (and I may not, so feel free to correct me), there are
              two options for PPGTG travellers. After leaving Alice springs, either;
              - Head into the West Macs with the main group, camp at Glen Helen, then continue around the Mereenie loop
              to Kings Canyon, or...
              - Head into the West Macs, divert away from the main group, and head down to Boggy Hole. Bush camp at
at Boggy Hole, then head south and meet up with the main group at Kings Canyon. I should note that Boggy
Hole is bush camping, ie: zero facilities. No water, showers, toilets, bring in your own firewood, etc.

The track in last year was quite soft and sandy in the northern section (From Hermansburg to Boggy Hole) where the track runs down the bottom of the Finke River bed, and poorly maintained station tracks on the southern section (From Boggy
              Hole out).

The northern section has some very huge corrugations, or very small whoop-d-do's if you know what I mean. Travel is
slow, and you bounce around a lot <smile>, but the views from the river bed to the red cliff sides are well worth it.
The track also had some very tight hairpin bends that could be interesting with a trailer. Not impossible, just interesting.
Of course since August last year, there has been floods in the centre which could have affected the track in the riverbed
a lot. Who knows what the conditions will be like come this July.

I had a nice chat with the ranger when I was camped at Boggy Hole (I'd met him the previous night at Palm Valley, and
he took a drive down to Boggy Hole the next day to check things out. He stopped and had lunch with me at Boggy Hole).
He mentioned that they have many issues with trailers failing in the area, but that they are often 'standard' trailers, and
not purpose built off-road trailers. My opinion (and it's only an opinion), is that a decent offroad trailer would be fine
through Boggy Hole, especially if traveling in a group with other non towing vehicles to assist with recovery if needed.
Hey, being in WA, we're used to lots of soft sand.

I'll be heading down to Boggy Hole, as I actually like the spot, and bush camping. It may not be for everybody, but at least
you have a bit more info to go by hopefully.

Nice work John thats some good info,
So I reckon theres at least 4 going the Boggy hole route from the WA mob. Im 90% going via Boggy so that would be five. I cant imagine Chippy not going so thats 6.

I still haven’t decided about boggy Hole yet.

The other places on Mavs itinerary are also very stunning.

Simpsons Gap,Stanley Chasm,Ellery big hole ,Ormiston Gorge.

I would be a pity to miss them.

I would also love a bit of 4wdn, sleeping under the stars with snakes and dingos

I'll decide soon and keep you posted.

Quite true Russ/Mav. Having the experience of seeing those places (and Boggy Hole), I'll drop
in another personal opinion. If you haven't visited the centre before, think very carefully about
missing out on seeing the places on the standard GTG route. Places like Ormiston Gorge, Glen
Helen and Gosse Bluff are especially worthwhile. They are very much worth seeing, and definitely
more scenic than the Boggy Hole route overall.

Of course if you have seen them before, or just like to get that little bit further off the beaten track,
then Boggy Hole is a great run as well.
