  • Extended warranty

I have just bought a new Prado GXL. The dealer suggested that I purchase an extended warranty; an additional 3 years at a cost of $2000. Any thoughts?

    Hi,

If it's a diesel then I would get it but 2k seems like a lot. I bought mine in January and got it thrown in with the deal. To be fair I was going to get a petrol but they only had diesels in the country, it was a three month wait for the next petrol, and the salesman wanted me to take what he had.

      Hi again,

I'm sure it only retails for around $1350? Maybe check with Toyota direct.

There are a couple of threads already on extended warranty, have a look and you can see what has been said before. If you decide to get the warranty make sure it is genuine Toyota Extracare warranty and not some dealer backed option. Extracare is about $1750 retail from memory.

I just read the toyota extra care product disclosure, and from my reading, the 36month extra warrantee includes a maximum 150,000 km driven, so if you finish your factory warrantee after 3 years with 100,000 km on the clock, the extra 36 month warrantee runs out after 3 years OR when you complete another 50,000 km, so you might not get a full 36 months extra warrantee (depending on how much you drive).

          Did I read that right?

Correct. Mine was 6 years or 200k (120 warranty x 2). Runs out in January and I only have 125K on the clock.

Just went through this with dealers. Extra 3yrs Toyota warranty should be $1500 extra (or less). There is apparently a version with 6yrs roadside assistance (NRMA premium equivalent) which is about $1950.

If they are quoting $2k for just the extra warranty tell them they are way off the mark! Actually, either way tell them they are too expensive!! I believe you should be able to get the standard one for $1350 or so and the roadside assistance one for $1850.

That is correct. An extra 50,000 or 36mths, whatever comes first. If you hit 150,000km under three years you get nothing. I went through this at length with the dealer and separately on the phone with toyota extra care. The cost was $1960 if i purchased through either, no cheaper option with out reducing time frame (ie: 2yrs extra instead of 3yrs) no roadside assist is included. Could not get it thrown in or reduced in the deal but thats darwin for you!!

My warranty went to close to 200,000km. I should check.

There are various warranties .... mine was the extra three years with the highest mileage.

My vehicle (which I am selling but I cannot list it for sale on the sales thread because it gets deleted due to thread highjacking!) still has over a year standard warranty, so I can either cash the warranty in, or get Toyota finance to transfer the warranty.

Interestingly the warranty cannot be passed onto a dealership. So, if you trade in your vehicle, you simply cash in the warranty.

My refund is worth $1,295 from Toyota.

Hence I think the longest warranty deal likely costs the dealer $1,295. But who really knows!!!

A dealer might discount the extra warranty price though ... hence reducing the sticker price.

Make sure with your dealer, that the warranty is the Toyota one ... and that its the longest one. The person who does the warranty stuff will prefer to sell you a 3rd party warranty, because he would make a good profit margin on such a product. So, ENSURE you are getting the Toyota warranty, and the long one!!!

By the way, if you cross over the warranty 3 year period, then I am unsure if you can get the warranty back. But I think you would, and it should be Pro Rata - ie if your vehicle is 4 years old exactly, then there would be 2 years left of the extra three year warranty. Hence you should be able to cash it in for 2/3rds of $1,295. But people should check with Toyota on that, but I am pretty sure that like most insurance things Pro Rata returns are standard practice. Especially since the warranty is distinguised if the vehicle is sold to a trade organisation ie a car dealer.

It would be interesting to ask for your warranty money back ... they should refund the purchase price, and if its been used by now, then a pro rate amount (ie less based on the amount of monthly warranty used up v remaining). So if yours cost $1960, and your vehicle is 4 years and 6 months old, then your warranty would have 18 months left. So you should be able to get back half of your $1960, ie $980.

If they offer you less back, then that difference would be dealer margin ... or Toyota Finance margin. I think in law they have to refund what you paid that has not been used. Including the over priced profit margin.

I have factory approved extended warranty which will expire this year for my 2009 120 series GXL D4D Prado. It cost me about $1500 and so far I have had the injectors replaced @ about 108,000kms and the bushes replaced in the gear-stick.

Last week I went to my local Toyota to see if my steering wheel could be replaced as the steering wheel is starting to come apart, my headlights replaced due to UV damage and the drivers sun-visor as it won't stay up all the way and it's binding. See attached photos for the steering wheel and headlight.

Toyota said they never had warranty approved for the steering wheel and lights due to "wear and tear". I said still put the claim through and see what happens.

Well Monday just come I find out that I have approval for the lot to be replaced and just waiting on parts to arrive.

I have a few questions and that is I have an ARB Deluxe bar. Will this need to be removed to gain access to the head lights?
Does Toyota have to remove their genuine bull bar to get to the headlights? and
If the bullbar does need to be removed is labour covered for this part of the repair?
