  • What's going on with second hand 150 prices?

Apologies if I'm missing something but without doing any hard stats, I'm convinced second hand asking prices for 150 GXL's are generally up this year from last and by around 10%! (mind you I've only been looking at KDJ150R's with sub 100,000 kms). As I'm in the market I've been keeping an eye out for at least 4 months and I admit, there may be some seasonal issues at play but I do have a bit of a theory that I'd be interested in others thoughts on. When researching vehicles values on either careless or redbook, the private sale price range given for a 2011 KDJ150R auto diesel is $40,700 - $44,600 with an mileage range of 60,000-100,000kms is given. If you have advertised a car recently on Carsales you may have noticed that after completing your details the website will give you a suggested 'selling' price based on the information you have entered. Using the same basic car specs, the Carsales website will suggest that the car above should sell at a higher price, around $47-$48,000 ( at least this was the case since Christmas and up until the last few days - it now looks like the link to the rebook values is the same). Did anyone else notice this? Also the current cars for sale are, in general a good 10% above the rebook selling price range. Does this mean most folks are factoring a 10% haggle reduction?

Started off looking for a second had GXL with low kms. Something with some factory warranty left for bait of piece of mind. I found that they were fetching mid to high 50's for something with km in the range of say 3000-15000 km. I ended buying a brand new one for $60K drive away. So I agree, used prado prices are definitely high.

Yep, did the same. I do wonder what the sellers are really getting though, it's a bit like the 4.2litre Patrols, stupid prices but I'm not sure if people are actually parting with the asking price.

It really does make new ones look like an option as you say. Plenty of 3 year old (or 2012 plated) GXL's well into the $50K's and probably without factory warranties...

When I bought my first new 120 in 2005 used ones with 40k on the clock were only $200 cheaper than what we paid brand new, so nothing new about Prado's holding their value.

            Not only prado's...corolla's as well...
When i bought the prado I looked at second hand most prices were higher than buying new.at RRP
I asked the sales man why..was told a lot of people think it cost too much for new so do not
look at the price of a new car thinking to many $$$$$$
            With the corolla RRP $26000+orc
            second hand asking price...$19 500 / 23 000+orc 2yo with about 40000km
            Brand new $21003 drive away
            Cheers
            Happy hunting

By the time you factor in stamp duty & transfer fee's etc, there's not a big difference in price, hence why I went new as well.

I just looked tonight and fell off my chair. I was curious as to what I might expect to get for my 2014 in 4 years, by the looks close to $40k, that's double what my last patrol was worth at the same age and kms.

Cant compare Landcruisers and Patrols for resale as rule. I just sold my 1994 80 series for $11K (Petrol/LPG Auto GXL). Same type of Patrol you wouldn't get more than 5 or 6K.

Toyota resale value is great until you look at buying one secondhand, looked at few cruiser utes recently and it's scary what they are asking.

My folks buy a new Territory every 5 years, he's on his 3rd. His resale is 15% of his purchase price in 5 years. My Prado is almost 7 years old and resale is around 65% of purchase price. Oh what a feeling. I just can't seem to get him into a Kluger though...

I'm another one that took a good look at the prices that were being asked for a decent 150 and bought new. To be honest, used car salesmen are delusional with some prices being asked. One example was a 2011 blue manual GXL with a ARB winch colour coded, nothing else, with 65,000 on the clock. Early 2014 they wanted $53,500 for it, bought new silver facelift manual GXL for $58,500. Is an ARB bar and 65,000Km of unknown worth only a $5,000 discount, I didn't think so.
