  • New Member - Requiring advice on the purchase of a new Prado

    H i All,

I'm requesting some advice on behalf of my father who is in the process of purchasing a new Prado (4L Petrol V6 GXL Automatic). The query is mainly concerned with the towing performance. The Toyota brochure currently lists the towing capacity at 2,500 kg. He intends to tow a dual axle caravan, which when fully loaded will weight about 2,200 kg. Can any members please provide some feedback as to the performance of the vehicle (ie: handling capabilities, power, fuel economy) while towing such loads?

Also, in the future he intends to convert to LPG, does this have any adverse affects on towing performance and are there any modifications required to the vehicle to maintain that performance?

Your advice and feedback would be much appreciated - Thanks!

    Cheers

    Rodney

Rodney, you may want to do a search on towing, but you can start with this one. http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=2311

      Hi Rodney,
Fuel consumtion is so very variable depending on so many factors of driving styles and conditions.
I have a 120 V6 auto and tow a 22ft tandem axle full-sized caravan with an ATM of 2200kg. I always use premium ULP and achieve around 16-17 l/100k on gentle undulating terrain and at 90 kph. I can watch the numbers change dramatically on the go with my scangaugeII as I tackle hills and through towns. I have a completely standard vehicle and have never suffered from overheating even in 40+ temps. I just drive appropriately and keep an eye on the gauges. All in all I am well pleased with the performance of the Prado, it is soooo smooth and quiet and pulls the load well. The auto is just impecable in behaviour and I often shift from overdrive 5th to 4th manually as needed. I don't expect to keep up with solo cars in acceleration and pace but enjoy the fact that we are on holiday and in a low stressed period of our lives. It is more important to have no problems on the journey than to try and overtake unnecessarily just to prove you can do it.
      Enjoy
      Roger

The Journey and where you stop along the way is just as important as the destination!

Towing has been covered numerous times, I would suggest use of the search button to dig out the threads, then ask any questions that havent been answered by the exisiting info.
