  • Paying another persons vehicle tax

I went to do the transfer on the prado i purchased a few weeks ago.

When looking on the NSW RTA site i came across this little gem.

'And you may need to pay:

Additional motor vehicle tax (or national heavy vehicle charges) if you have bought your vehicle from someone receiving an RTA concession (such as a pensioner) and you are not eligible for that concession.'

Since when do i become liable for another persons taxes?

If my friend has a tax bill i am not liable to pay his, so why should i have to pay the outstanding vehicle tax because the NSW state govt chooses to give a pensioner a rebate on the tax?

Surely this would have to be cosidered illegal if it wasn't in the legislation? then again i suppose that the fed govt calculates the GST on fuel after all other taxes have been added so it's as much a tax on a tax.

At the end of the day all govenments are unhung scoundrels and this is just another way to prove it.

What is the difference between a lawyer and a catfish ??

One is bottom feeding scum and the other is just a fish

Politicians are similar to lawyers but don't feel any need to be honest.

Chippy - there is no such thing as just a fish. Just! just? :?

But Muddles, that is crazy. Perhaps an RTA concession should extend to cover the vehicle tax. Now wouldn't that be a silly idea?

Is this not for the the remainding registration left on the car? I am just taking a guess here but when a pensioner registers their car here in SA, they pay less to do so than I do. I am thinking that what they are talking about here is the difference between what they have paid and what you should pay on the remainding registration.

Hope there was some sence in all that babble

              Scojohara is right.
At the start of the year, lets say your registration is $500- for that car. If you are a pensioner, you only pay $250. When the car is sold say after 6 months, then there is effectively $250- registration cost but the pensioner you bought the car from has only paid half that amount. Therefore you are required to make up the difference.

It's understandable but I often wonder whether it costs them more to workit out & complete the extra paperwork than they actually get back.

I once had a whinge to the RTA about the cost of registration & she told me my money goes to building better roads. I told her to Stop. I actually preferred driving where there were no roads. I explained that it would cut down on speeding & hoons in their rediculously lowered cars. People would enjoy the experience more & there would be more wildlife around. As if to provide evidence of the quality of staff employed at this fine government organisation shesimply said "whatever" :?

One would assume that you would only pay pro rata for the portion of rego left.

I am not sure if it is just for the year that you purchased it. You can only hope it is.

I can say for sure that you are liable for the tax. it isn't about not getting the discount you actually have to pay the portion tha they didn't as a pensioner.

It's a good one, this one.

Paid this wonderful little tax on our camper trailer, bought from a retired couple.

Each retiree in NSW gets 1 free rego, so a couple gets 2 cars or 1 car and a trailer or van. When you buy their vehicle, the RTA says that you are not entitled to drive it tax free, so they charge you for it.

I'm glad it was a trailer and not a car as the fees are considerably less. Considerably more than I was expecting to pay though.

                        Hi VX,

Was it just for that year or all the back years as well?

Yeah, it was only for the current year, and looking at it now, I think it was only for the remainder of the rego year.
