            Hi Joey
mate can i ask (hopefully without offending) why would you buy a Jeep?, old technology, pretty ordinary ride and very ordinary build quality.
I understand they are very cheap to modify (crawler gears/lift etc) as parts out of the states are cheap (esp with AUD at 0.9250) and are very capable offroad - but otherwise i can give you a first hand story of a good friend's woes with a new Jeep :-(
            Cheers

Re: How much is my Prado worth, How should I sell it

A mate of mine who is a Toyota dealer reckons hands down return it to original before selling and then privately sell the accessories you cant recycle. His reasoning is simple, modified in the eyes of the average buyer = abused and hard life. You need to remember the average Prado buyer would never get it dirty and wants a show pony tractor to ferry the clan, therefore a modified 4x4 is unsuitable and no percieved value to them. I have kept all my old parts to do the same when I sell the 120. You wont need to spend $20K to make the Jeep rock off road! they are great stock.

If i had the time and patience I would return it as best I could to original and sell the accessories indivdually or transfer them to the wrangler. accessories generally dont add value when selling a vehicle and mods can sometimes narrow your potential market. Sell it privately, dont waste your time with car dealers.

I like the new wranglers and would buy one without thinking twice if I could. make sure you get the rubicon. factory sway bar disconnects, factory diff locks, soft top, half doors. no one is going to beat toyota reliability but thats not all that counts in a 4wd, and quality has picked up in jeeps with the most recent lineup since daimler was brought into the picture.

When you buy a jeep, you almost need two, one to drive while the other one is getting fixed, trust me i had one, great fun car but in two years i lost count the number of times i had to take it back for warranty work, after selling a t oyota to buy a jeep this was the most frustrating two years of my life??

                        My 2 cents.

Re: How much is my Prado worth, How should I sell it

Just sold my 98 GXL V6. Took less than a week.

First, I had a good look at the classifieds and on-line to see what sort of money people were asking for similar vehicles. I then figured my car was worth somewhere in between $10 - 15k. I know mine was going to be in the upper region based on complete service history, always looked after, accessories, tyres, residual rego and at 190,000km at the lower end of the mileage for cars of this age.

Local dealer had a bog stock 98 RV6 in white and was asking $14,990. Car dealers notoriously asked 2 - 3k above the real price for similar cars so I stuck a sign on it for $14,000. I parked it on Boulder Road on a vacant block used by the locals to sell cars/boats/vans etc. First day nothing, second day nothing, third day took a call and met a guy at the car. He went for a test drive and said he wanted the car. Had to organise some finance. He rang me on day 4 and asked if I would take $12,500 and I said I really had $13,000 as bottom line. Day 5 he handed me $13k in cash.

Car sold - no advertising, no dealers, no hassles. I spent a whole weekend detailing the car including the under-carriage and the hard work paid off.

Re: How much is my Prado worth, How should I sell it

My sales girl at work has a son who forked out cash for a brand new Wrangler about 8 months ago. This thing breaks down with notorious monotomy. The f@#%ker stopped again last week on Sunday. The crime? Driving through a puddle. The woman at the service desk said "thats not a warranty problem, you are not supposed to drive through water" (extended silence x4)
I would not trade my Prado for a Wrangler even if it was a gold plated titanium bodied Jeep with Lara Bingle in the passenger seat.
150 Vx D4D, Deluxe Arb bar, winch, Hayman Reece Towbar, UBP, P3 Tekonsha, 'n stuff.
"When cooking on a camp fire it must be cool enough to cook on so it needs to burn down to coals, at least in parts. It is customary to drink beer while waiting for the fire to cool down.
I recommend starting with a very big fire"-Vince.
