Re: Sell me the Land Cruiser Prado

l've recently bought an 07 d4d Prado after having a Discovery and a few Range Rovers both new [when the were'nt over priced] and used and will never have them again. Totally unreliable before and after warranty. My brother is afarmer and convinced me that Toyotas are the only vehicle to have in the country.I've recently disposed of my year 2000 Rangie and look forward to having some reliability.

I owned LC80 for 12 years and never had a single break down. My LC120 was even better.

You can't go wrong with the LandCruiser or Prado

Re: Sell me the Land Cruiser Prado

I still have to find money for a Bullbar, towbar, Roof racks, GPS, Bluetooth etc which all came with the 120.
        GPS <$400 from Officework.

Otherwise, Towbar for <$600 from Toyota, + Bullbar can wait for 6-12 months time

Just check the price for LC150; GX Turbo Diesel, Manual, 5 seater: RRP $55,990 on Redbook.com.au here:

        http://www.redbook.com.au/new-cars/d...d=1252122D3BA0

So, in 6 months time, you can get one of them with drive away price under $53,000 for sure!

        Good luck :P

I would prefer the D4D over the V6 for economy but I made a excel table of all the second0hand Prado's for sale in SEQ between 2006-2009 (this is the only model I am interested in). I applied a weighting to each category such as engine, trans, year, price, kms etc. And then added them up (or subtracted if it was a bad thing such as 150K kms attracted big -ve). One thing that came out was that the V6 was on average (no matter what year or kms) $10K cheaper than the D4D. Considering we are going to drive around 200km/week it will take 5-10 years to make that back in fuel savings. So the Economy is not there. Buying Brand new is a different story where the D4D is only $1K different...

I drive a ST-R Navara at work and it s a 3Tdi and I like it, but it has nothing on the D4D in the Hilux's, and the Hilux's have nothing on a Prado D4D...

Mid next year is my planned purchase time, I would definately give a new 150 a look before a second hand 120 BUT... the GX does not have all the new features of the Kakadu, and the tank is smaller, the 150 is built on the 120 chassis and engines and gearboxes, so apart from a few airbags and TC and a new body its largely the same car for a lot more coin. But resale will win here. Something that helps upgrading to the next model each time.

I had an XR6 Turbo Ute (Hence YOOT) before the XT, and I paid $39K on the road for it new, 3 years on I sold it for $30K and bought the Forester for $43K, its still hovering around the $30K mark but might get about $25-28K next year for it. With a nice fat dividend from work I might just be able to pick up a 150 if it sin the $50K's.

            As for accessories:

GPS - i can't stand the windscreen things with the power cable, it has to be built in, either factory or from aftermarket. They are sooo much better than those little things (and they look hideous!)
Tow Bar - yeah not dear at all
Bullbar - Have to have one! I would get at least the ARB Delux colour-coded with HID driving lights.
Roofrack - since a 150GX does not have foor rails I would slap an ARB unit straight on (I think prado's look underdone with no rails or racks).
Airlockers - Depending on dividend payments I would say a 150series would have TC which should be enough, but I do want an onboard compressor for tyres (I hate parking on the beach exit in the Forester with the bonnet up, compressor out, pumoing up the tyres. Makes me look like the Forester has broken down ) On board would be so much slicker.

I think that with the claimed improvements in fuel economy of the 150 series, the smaller tank would give the same ballpark range as the 120 series with the 180L tank.

How does traction control work with ARB Airlockers? If I went a VX or a 150GX which both have TC, does the Airlockers make it go haywire?

I guess, as TC is standard across the model range, the question will answer itself if ARB bring out an airlocker for the 150.

But going back to basics and thinking about it. TC basically is designed to overcome the deficiencies of "open" diffs , as I understand it, by braking a spinning wheel so that power is given ( via the diff )to the opposite wheel. . Hopefully that wheel has purchase and will move the vehicle forward. Now with a cross axle diff lock, there should be less wheel spin anyway, but if there is, both wheels will spin at the same rate. ( that's what a diff lock does )
So would traction control in this instance brake both wheels ( not good ) or not kick in at all ? I'm not sure but one would hope it is smart enough to sense both wheels spinning on one axle and not brake any.

I know on the Land Rover Defenders which have had TC since 1999, there's plenty with lockers fitted.

Anyway if it were me, I wouldn't see the need for diff locks as well as TC, unless I was doing really hard core stuff, and then the Prado is not really designed for that anyway.
The 120 TC works really well, I'm presuming there's been tweaks so the 150 should work even better. And I'd rather put the $6K for airlockers towards a Kakadu with CRAWL technology.
                  Cheers, Wayne

None of the LC120 had factory fitted memory seats or camera.

Re: Sell me the Land Cruiser Prado

I think I have found another option.

The Mitsubishi Challenger is back! I'm stoked, I have always liked these trucks, they are based on the Triton with Coils at the rear.

The truck looks nice, might not be as big as the Prado, but neither is the price tag. Base model is well equiped and comes standard with 400nm Diesel and Rear diff lock. All models seem to have huge ground clearance and the same SuperSelect 4WD as the Pajero.

I am seriously tempted at an 5-Speed Auto LS, would suit my needs almost perfectly.

Pricing is around $44K Manual and $47K for the SL Auto and rises to $57K for the XLS.

I know its a Mitsu (which is a sweat word) but they have a huge warrenty and the product design and packaging seems to be on the improve.

You see, there's your problem - don't let the wife drive it all if she has to alter anything.

Buy her a Camry or similar (like I did) and that should keep her happy and out of your wheels!
