  • Beach Camping / Fishing WA

    Hi

Looking for someone to point me in the right direction, advice, websites, books etc...

I currently enjoy camping on the beach and fishing at Preston & Myalup.

Looking to (expand my horizons) try other places, further South or up North.

My hit list at the moment is (but don't know much about them):

    Cape LeGrande
    Coral Bay
    Jurian Bay
    Lancelin
    Red Bluff

Can anyone offer me advice on what they rate and whether I can camp on the beach without being busted by a ranger? Websites / books on how to get to places etc...

I grew up in the Pilbara region, and as a young tacker (30 years ago), was bought along on fishing trips around Port Hedland (no idea) where. Have very fond memories of up North.

    Cheers

Yeagarup Dunes (south of Pemberton) are great. Fun drive through the dunes and the beach is great. Take your recovery gear and a few shovels. Fishing all year round for tailor, sharks and smaller stuff like whiting, herring etc. But be there March-April-May and the salmon are in town. That's when it's really interesting. April school holidays/Easter can get a bit like Hay Street - but the fish are alway there then!

Camping on the beach is easy, or near the mouth of the Warren River. Just be prepared for wind. Set up at the base of the dunes or risk being run over by some clown with fully-inlated tyres who can't afford to slow down. Midweek tends be nice and quiet, weekends a bit busier...

And you can even scoot around a bit and check out Lake Jasper (see http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=1886

It's through the National Park so, no dogs...

Was planning on camping along near Preston on the beach but never done it before. Are there any issues with places you're not allowed to camp or not safe to camp etc? Don't spose high tides are an issue this time of year? I drove down there one year about sept/oct and the beach was impassable in sections.

          Any info appreciated.

            Sorry
Haven't been on here for a while.

No issue camping on Preston. On Easter long Weekend, Good Friday night there were easily, 30 cars camped on the edge of the dunes (in the dunes is private property) for the night.

Never been there when its near on impassable and i've been there a fair few times over the last 5 years.

Technicially it is illegal to camp on the beach. Even when Ranger passes by, they have a chat and are more interested to see if you're a sensible person and don't have a stash of undersize fish. Camping has never entered the discussions even though its obvious when my my swag is fully set out, kitchen sink is set up etc...

What they (rangers) are big on is the 4 wheeler bikes.

when i lived in WA we used to go camping at the northern end of Hamlin bay, but I haven't been home for 8yrs or so, hoping they (greenies) haven't ruined it by getting it closed, because I'm going back home for a holiday later this year,

We have just had nearly three weeks in paradise along the coast between Carnarvon and Exmouth and would recommend as a MUST for all

Our camper trailer at Woorara was twenty metres from the waters edge and twenty steps at Winderabandi Point

Didn't see anyone for four days at Woorara 30 deg each day 14 at night and water temp of 28

Can't wait to return to what must be the best kept secret on earth

Bugger the secret is out. What a great place Woorara is.

Another great spot is Sandy Cape, 10km north of Jurien Bay. Caretaker on site and bays are marked. Cheap to stay with water available and drop toilets. Nice beach too. Worth a visit.

Have you tried Bremer Bay east of Albany?
Lots of really nice beaches all facing different ways so you can always find one out of the wind.
We camped on Pepermint beach a month ago for the night, great for the whole family to swim and also can find some surf as well.
Great salmon fishing when they are about too.
                    One of my favourite beaches.

Re: Beach Camping / Fishing WA

If you want to camp legally right near the beach you can check out Sandy Cape, which is just North of Jurien Bay. You'd need to get going as early as possible though if you want to go there on a long weekend. Careful in the middle of Summer though as it can get very hot there when the Easterly blows all day. At this time of year though the weather would be perfect and you could catch Tailor and Herring off the beach without much effort. Haven't been there in a few years, but I'm told you no longer need 4WD getting in there as the Dandaragan Shire has put in a good road. You can also camp at Booker Valley which is one bay South of Jurien. You will need 4WD to get there though. The road (read "track") to Booker Valley starts from the new housing development at the southern end of the Jurien townsite. Not a recognised camping area but we recently had friends camp there over the Easter break without incident. There's a good stand of nice trees there for cover too if you can wing that spot, otherwise it can be a bit exposed there. You can always haul out back to Jurien if things go pear shaped. The shire lets people camp on the town oval during holiday periods if the caravan park gets full, which it often does. The Jurien caravan park is right next to the ocean too by the way, and two good fishing jetties. That can be a bit busy though, and it's smack between the tavern and the pub so you might not get all that much sleep. You've also got the pinnacles close to Cervantes (which everyone knows about), Mt Lesueur national park which has a nice drive and walk to do in wildflower season, and stockyard gully caves where a creek has carved out a tunnel through limestone and is actually quite spectacular if you keep going through the first cave system and into the second one.... which not many people seem to do.

Earlier on this year I was staying in Walpole and decided to have a look at Mandalay Beach I noticed a track that runs off the dirt road that goes to Mandaly so I decided I will have a look down the track after taking the kids for a swim . So on the way back I followed this track to a spot called Long Point its from memory about 8-10 k's through some boggy spots but I did not air down and at the end of the track was a nice shady camp sight protected by Pepperment trees and just a short walk over the dunes to a beautiful beach . So I thort a must for a fishing weekend with the boys . My wife wont go as there are no showers or toilets ... Dam shame she will have to stay home .

Hi another nice spot down south is Peaceful Bay near Walpole , there is a caravan park next to the beach and from there some good 4wd tracks take you onto the beaches , you can let your tyres down and fill them back at the General Store near where the tracks start. Some soft sand around so be alert , but a great place to stay. Cheers Digger

Yes I ventured there as well as Conspicuos Cliffs . There was a Salmon Camp at Peaceful Bay at the time and all they were pulling in was TONNES of Herring ... Why they call it a Salmon Camp ?

Those books on free camping spots north and south look awesome. I'll def have to go get them. Thanks heaps for putting those links in. I've just bought my first 4wd (at 34yo). Prado is such a great car. My cheeky little 2.5 year old gives me directions as to which sand tracks she would like to go on. haha.
