  • Glendon Camp Grounds - Warwick

I did a search here for the word Glendon but didn't get any hits.
We just spent 3 days there and I wanted to give a quick overview of the place from a purely 4wd point of view.
This park is aimed predominatnly at motorcross and quad bikers. Whilst on the tracks (which are not difficult at all) we had a few bikes either come at us head on or try to get around us - which wasn't too much fun. The place is VERY rocky with sharp shale, so letting the tyre pressure down is a must.
Area is big, but we found the constant motorbike traffic caused heaps of dust. It took me over 3 hours just to clean the INSIDE of the Prado when we got home. The dam is ok for kayaking but not great for fishing or swimming. The water is a brown tee-tree looking colour and you can't see through it at all. The only thing I caught on my line was snags.
All in all we would probably not go back there, but if you have kids with motorbikes then it is probably an ideal spot.

    Cheers,
    J.

Thanks for the feedback as my neighbours were there last weekend also and have raved about it. Having said that, they were there with bikes/quads so what you say makes sense. They stayed in onsite caravans which made it easy for them. I'd be nervous too about having an inexperienced biker (like my neighbours kids) whipping around a corner and becoming lodged in my bullbar...

I quite like Glendon, but I go there for the gold fossicking, not the 4WDing. I've been over most of the property, and as far as 4WDing goes it is pretty basic. The tracks are mostly very straightforward dirt tracks that are mostly high-clearance 2WD accessible. I don't usually lock the diff, and haven't bothered lowering tyre pressures. In fact, a lot of the tracks could be taken in a conventional car if you were careful with your lines. I think the only time I've needed 4WD was once when I took a particularly steep gully, and another time when a big storm came in and made the clay a bit slippery.

About the most challenging part of the place is that there are a few tracks that get a bit narrow - I have had to pull my mirrors in to get past trees. Once I was following a set of tracks until they went either side of a large tree, and I realised I was actually following a pair of motorbike tracks, not a car track. I've also started following a track that got narrower to the point where I couldn't go any further forward and I couldn't turn around, which presented a bit of a challenge reversing through a track that was barely wider than the car. Obviously I was following a bike track instead of a car track. I've had quite a bit of fun there, but I do think that if I went there just for the 4WDing I'd feel a bit ripped off.

I can generally find a nice quiet spot where I can have a dig and a pan, and I always come away with some colour, but the best part is being able to relax in a nice bit of bushland. Out the back of the property there aren't too many bikes, and that is also where the best gold is. Plus I don't think things get much better than at night camping down by the creek with the frogs croaking. If you're really lucky you can sometimes spot a platypus in the creek too.

That sounds like fun. We tried our hand at the fossicking and panning too. I took my own metal detector but apart from 3 soft drink cans I found nothing
We also got a couple of pans and did a bit of that too but since we don't know what we are doing or how to do it - and for that sense what we are actually looking out for we probably tipped any flakes out with the debris. Also would have helped if we knew where abouts in the park was the best spot for panning too.
