Sundown NP Weekend Trip 2013: (I know Fozzy wanted to about this place)

Left home at 6pm and after stopping for Dinner & refuelling, reached Redrock Gorge Campsite at 10.45pm for a quick Coffee and then rolled out swags for the night.... To my surprise I had phone coverage from this campsite.

With a lazy rise in the following morning, it was a quick walk down to the viewing plateform of Redrock Gorge, then back to pack up and head off further into the park. This time we took one of the side tracks which took us to another isolated campsite within walking distance of the rock face itself. A good place to camp next time. From here, it was just following the sometimes washed out track which eventually ment back up with the main track into the park. Stop for smoko at the old mining site then pushed on into the park, coming across wild Deer and Grey Kangaroos, etc.

Reached the T/O to Burrows waterhole campsite and decided to vee left to continue towards Rats Castle. Reached the 1st hard decent section and this is where we found out that the Discovery had no 4WD. The Centre Diff-lock wasn't working, so Jeff jumped in the Vit and off down the hill and onto the river crossings. This time the water was at a level that was safe to cross when theres only a single vehicle.... Crossed the river twice until we came to the last crossing b4 reaching Rats Castle. This crossing took a bit more time to cross as u had to pick the right line to make sure 1. U got across and 2. U got across w/o any damage.
On the other side we pushed on past a couple camping that seem surprised to see the little Vitara driving past.... Kept following the river until we came to another Y junction.... We decided to go left and see where that took us. This took us to another river x-ing which we decided it wasn't worth the risk when we only had the one car, so this is one Track I've got to come back with some more vehicles and continue to find out where it goes..... An epic journey I reckon if it goes where I think it does.... Another time.... maybe a Club Camp ??
Back to the Y-Jct and then up the hillclimbs (some good challenges for those game) and down the other side and back across the river and made our way back to Burrows Waterhole to setup camp for for our last night.
In the morning we packed up and started our journey out of the park. The drive out took us about an 1hr 10min to reach the park boundary and this is where things went pear shape for me.... I saw a track off to the left, so I told Jeff to head out while I go and have a bit of a look.... The looked good until it dropped into the creek and this is where I heard the rear Autolocker give up as I climbed out of the creek.... A quick turn around and back the way I came and out the park to inspect the damage....
Found a place to stop for lunch and tried removing the rear driveshaft and drive on the front but this was too unsafe, so back on with the rear driveshaft and try our luck in nursing the car back home slowly. Reached Warwick where we decided it wasn't worth the risk and found a suitable spot to leave the Vitara and jumped in the Disco and return the following day to pick up the Vit....

Keen to get back down (once I've repaired the Zook ) but yes a great place to head to..... Keen as, to continue following the Track that follows the Severn River.... According to the AusTopo on the GPS, if the track continues, then it should pop out on the Western side of the Park...... hopefully not at a locked gate
cheers..... Rob (macca)

Rob,

Looking at your triplog, where you broke the Zook looks like the end of the "non-maintained" track that leads to Red Rock Camping area. It would be an epic trip in itself I think. I have a 4WD trip book that lists this route so would be keen to explore in company next time.

The first (and only) time I have done Sundown was on Grandtreks (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...Sundown-NP-QLD), no lift no lockers etc so a repeat visit would be a whole new experience.

Cheers,

Dave

Yeah, that's what I thought when I saw it on the GPS. After travelling along it for a few 100mtrs, I reckon it would be a ripper of a drive into the Redrock camping area. On the way out of the Redrock, we took a side-track to see where it tooks us. It lead us down to another fantastic hidden camp area within walking distance of the redrock cliffs.

I reckon u would need some good tyres these days to be able to get in and then get out. A lot of the hillclimbs had wombat holes which makes it difficult for open diff cars.

The track that follows the Severn River would be a fantastic trip, but I would like to know whether u can get out at the other end or not.... Has anyone been to the western side of the park (camping area) at all ?? You have to come in from Glenlyon / Texas way ???
cheers..... Rob (macca)

I've been to that western side camping area but it was 5+ years ago. We met my brother-in-law there who's family had camped the night before. There were cleared areas in the scrub on both sides of the track on the way in that were big enough to hold two family's camp sites each from memory. The track in from the west to the camping areas was a track a 2wd car could use. It was a while ago so I'm a little sketchy on details sorry. I do remember that we were driving into a really strong southerly on the way in and the car wouldn't go any faster than 80km/h without having to kick up into 3rd to keep it's speed. We did a decent 2hr drive on tracks the next day that led us to a camping area but I don't remember the name of it as I wasn't leading the way and didn't know the area. It was a huge cleared area with a long drop toilet in the middle of it. It was right next to a creek/river that was rocky as hell with very slippery rocks and was about 1.5 ft deep. The track in was a doozy which descended steeply and was pretty much made up of round bowling ball sized rocks and a couple dislodged on the way down and rolled down with the car which was hairy. Great place though. I can't believe I haven't been back since. Top spot.

So, from the western side at the camp grounds called "The Boardwater", did u follow the track / river upstream all the way to Rats Castle ?? If not, did u see a track coming from that direction ??

Years ago you could drive from Rats Castle down the river to Broadwater at the southern end of the NP. However in 1974 large flooding of the Severn River washed away a lot of the track and NPs closed it. You can't get through any more.
