  • Fraser Island

Between Christmas and New Years this year, I am planning on going over to Fraser Island for a couple of nights while away. For those that go over to Fraser Island reasonable regularly, will I have to book the Ferry over and will I have to book a camping site. I have never been there so I don't even know what the camping is like.
I will be towing a camper trailer, where is is best to get on the ferry to make the path in a bit easier until I get rid of the trailer
    thanks

Scojohara, mate no need to book the ferry at inskip point, as you just drive on whatever one is their ready, they both cost the same, you just have to come back on the same one as the ticket is return. Campsite is a different story, will need to book that particular at christmas. Inskip is the best point to catch the barge over (20min Run) as then you are travelling along the eastern beach which is easy running at low tide. The barge from Hervey bay is a hour run then you have to cross the island which is hard going especially with a trailer. I jus towed atrailer over ran 18 PSI the whole time with no issues.
It is a great place enjoy!!!

Thanks for that Hutch. Do you have any suggestions about where to camp. Are you able to bush camp or is all camping in a park as such?

we camped at the Cathedral's at fraser, nice camp area, had a great kitchen area to cook and eat etc, with showers and toilets it allow us to camp on the cheap with being overly isolated. we liked the set up.

Central Station is also great and handy all areas. The trouble with going further north is that it takes longer to get there on your initial drive in and as having a trailer, time is of the essence, this may have to be taken into consideration.

Dragging a trailer into central station will be a lot harder going than another 45mins up the beach, Cathedral is another 45mins further north but at low tide it would be quicker than towing the trailer into somewhere like Central station. cathedral is 500mtrs off the beach. Some of tracks into central can be hard going and their is a far bit of uphill/ soft sand work as well. I am not sure what camping is their but happy valley could be another option.

I unfortunatly didn't get the chance to ring Cathedral's at fraser today but will be tomorrow. I checked their website and there isn't many camping areas there. With a wife and 2 daughters, showers are a good thing :?
I will let you know how I go.

Bad News: Two Tourists killed in 4wd crash

RESIDENTS are demanding the speed limit on Fraser Island beaches be reduced after two tourists were killed and nine injured in a horror accident yesterday.

The inexperienced group of foreign backpackers was in a hired Toyota LandCruiser troop carrier which lost control when the driver tried to avoid an incoming wave. Three people were thrown from the vehicle before it rolled at least 50m along the hard sand, landing on its roof.

                      Re: Fraser Island

I see the issue of beach driving made in onto our (NT) 7.30pm report with Stradbroke Is, Fraser Is and Broome all being discussed. The previously mentioned crash will mean that this issue will get more prominence in due course and no doubt be jumped upon by all groups that want to prohibit all forms of 4wd'ing on beaches.

                      Authorities Tighten Beach-Driving Rules

                      Stay tuned! :|

Yes, the premier has been on the news claiming how they will lower the speed limit to 80K P/H. i have been their a few times and didn't really no it to be anything other than 80 max so again we will acheive nothing. Most of the backpackers can't even drive let alone a 4WD on a beach with 11 people and the centre of gravity of a British double decker bus???

Yep .... I've only paid the island one visit .... and never felt the need to try and set a land speed record on the beach.

We did have a traffic jam though. Got off the barge and headed through one of the inland tracks only to get stuck in traffic.
A German tourist family, in a hired Landy, was buried to the floorpan in the middle of the track.

After much digging and pushing ... and still no movement .... a couple of locals suggested two things .............

 Lower the tyre pressures ....

                          AND

 Unhook the handbag from the handbag lever ... and move it forward.

Both suggestions had the miraculous result of allowing the vehicle to progress.

Perhaps the hire should be preceeded by a short course in HOW TO DRIVE !!!

                          Cheers

There is a great first or last night spot at inskip point, when you come off the beach and on to the inland road turn left and follow it all the way to the end, you will find an old boat ramp. the Dingo's are friendly

oh this a epic traffic Jam....

We really enjoyed our trip to Fraser and will be heading back there next year so I am keen to have a look at that spot dpom. It was a shame we didn't see one dingo on our stay, must have been too busy.
