  • Canning Stock Route

Just got back from a great trip up the CSR. Great trip, always love camping out in the outback. For a desert I was surprised to see so many trees. Meant there was never a problem getting firewood. We had no problems apart from a cracked roofrack and broken spare wheel rack(self made). We used about 13.5 l per km in fuel(Wiluna to Kunnawaritji 145 liters). The D40 Navara we went with used 205 liters for the same distance!! We must have struck the track in a good season as all the dunes were dead easy to cross(we were not towing anything) and there were plenty of flowering trees/bushes. Not much water in Durba Springs campsite(a bit green) but clean water further up the gorge. Great aboriginal artwork at the Calvert ranges. Came across a cyclist just south of Durba. An amazing guy raising money for the RFDS. 10deserts.com. Check it out.
If anyone wants more info on the track and conditions just get in touch and I'll be glad to help.

Gee the bloke on the bike was keen..............

            Couple of Qs Whitey
            * Something hanging off spare wheel. Is it additional fuel? And was there additional weight in this that caused broken Spare Tyre rack?
            * BFGs. How did they handle the track?
            * How did the Datsun go overall?
            Cheers

Awesome pics... I've got the Canning on the cards for 2011 so it was great to see your photos.

Looks like that Prado shell was the one from the famous burning Prado series of pics that did the rounds a few years ago. (I think ther even posted on here somewhere)

Had a MSA rubbish bag(canvas) on the spare.Didn't need any extra fuel 180 l is plenty although the sand was pretty firm on our trip. The spare tyre rack broke on corrugations because I didn't make it strong enough.
BFGs went well no probs at all.Nearly new at the start so didn't expect any probs. Ran them at 22 psi for the whole trip.
The "Datsun" D40 went fine apart from a lot of dust leakage, worn rear susp bush and it used 60 l more fuel than the Prado on the first leg(1100 km).

I didn't know I was preparing for the CSR but apparently I have, we leave Perth 10/07 for Kalgoorlie (got to drop in and see the brother in law and then Wiluna 11/07. second night at 10 mile camp site and after that we will stop where ever we feel like. 7 vehicles in the group but only one Prado so I should get a good feel for how much better the Prado is over every thing else.
Carrying a spare Jerry just in case but with 100 L at well 23 expect to get thru to Bilunna no worries
                  (300 l @ 5K/L=1500Kms) worst case senario,
60 cans of the amber, 26L red and 1 bottle Irish Whiskey for the cold nights, I know it seems a lot but after the CSR its on to the Bungles cause Hells Crack (Halls Creek to those that haven't been there) has restricted booze quantity laws. Oh yeah the boss has thown in a bit of food as well.
A couple days in Kununurra and down the Gibb river road with a side trip to the Mitchell Falls and every where else we can find.
On to Roebourne to visit a mate and then home
8 weeks 8-10,000 Kms black top, gravel, sand, rock and maybe a couple of creek crossings - Heaven on a stick.
If I figure out how, I will post a few holiday snaps when I get back

Sounds great Alen. i was watching the Pat Callinan DVD of his trip across CSR last night as there was nothing on telly. Looks like some great travelling through there. One day I'll get around to it but I've got a few other tracks to conquer first.

Sounds pretty much the same as our itinerary last year except we only had 6 weeks. Was only just enough to do all that. Have a great time and I wish I was going too. I hate cold weather!!

Bushbasher, Thanks for the info I knew that but its nice to have it confirmed. For those of you who don't know, you can get diesel at Kunawarratji and Billiluna but it's definately cash only and bloody expensive $3.52 L at Kunawarratji.

Last year when we went through, we filled up at Kunawarratji ($3.20) and they said they prefered credit cards because then they dont have so much cash around to worry about.
