  • Heading up Darwin way - tips needed

Going to be heading up to Darwin in early September with the missus for a couple of weeks. Due to time constraints I won't be able to take the Prado there from Melbourne and have been looking at hiring a Britz Bush Camper 4WD - basically a 70-series 'Cruiser with a tall roof, inside bedding, Engel, cooker, bullbar, snorkel etc. With fully comp insurance, reduced excess and a few extras I'm looking at around $2,000,- for a week's rental. Looks pretty sweet all up... BUT can anyone recommend any other rental companies up that way? Perhaps some smaller firms not on the web...

Also, any tips on Kakadu/Lichfield - destinations, tracks, permits, what to do and not to do. Any general info would be very welcome!

    Mucho thanks in advance!

Saw about 50/50 Britz to Apollo on our recent trip

You can always get those dodgy looking wicked campers the backpackers take them everywhere up here, they are cheap and nasty. Should try and organise a Darwin PP catch up.We haven't seen that much up here yet but everyone says that Litchfield national park is better than Kakadu, it'll be good to go with a few Darwinites for a day trip somewhere plus it will be good to have a fellow victorian up here so we can share the crap they give us for being Mexicans & Northern Tasmanians. But I do see quite alot of Apollo campers getting around.

Re: Heading up Darwin way - tips needed

Thanks guys - appreciate all the feedback - keep it coming!

I was in Darwin about three years ago for a mate's wedding (just a few days), but did manage to make it to Lichfield for a day (no camping) in a regular rental passenger car - and it was just gorgeous. Went for a dip at the Buley Rock Holes... bloody heaven on earth!

At this stage the plans are open, but yeah, should probably do a day or two in Lichfield too. I'll definitely want a real 4WD, otherwise my Prado withdrawal symptoms will be too much to cope with! :-) Will check out the Apollo campers too... The annoying thing is that I am very well set up with my own gear, but will have to leave the lot in Mexico... I mean Melbourne...

We're looking at hire from Monday 7th Sept til the following Sunday, so if calendars match up OK I'd be more than happy to catch up with fellow PP's... minus my Prado... snif... [wipes tear...]
