Bringing this thread to life after a couple of years.
We're heading over to Staddie on the 18th of March so we're looking for some interesting tracks to do on our day trip. Has anyone been down the Fishermans Track on Nth Stradbroke in the last couple of months? I'm after track condition and in particular, the final stretch that heads out onto the Main beach that Fozzy negotiated. Images from Nearmap.com show the track quite closed in and that's from Nov 2010. So if anyone has been down this track, I'd love a heads up.

    Cheers

We were up there on the weekend of the 25th Feb (that was the weekend it poured down rain every night). We drove from the beach up the creek for a little bit. and we also did about 200m from the tazi road end as well, didn't go all the way through cause we were running out of time and had to get back, plus my mate who showed us the track, said last time he drove it there were some deep holes (over the bonnet) solid on the bottom but he had his fridge in the back of the ute and it doesn't like water supposedly.

The beaches were good but we couldn't get onto the beach at the Amity Access track - hour after high tide there was sitll a big lagoon there and lots of trees. At low tide you could drive across the bottom of it through about 500mm of salt water.

Amity is a great campsite too, didn't even meet the caretakers and the first night when it was pouring down and after we'd set up in the rain, we got dry and did a runner to the community club - good feed and cold beers - when you get there you feel like your walking up some stairs onto someones back deck - but it is open to the public.

I'll dig up the photo's and post what I have.

Thanks Big dog. Sounds like the wife is going to have to bring a spare set of clothes so she can walk the track ahead of us.... Pics would be good if you can rustle some up thanks.

          Straddie 25th Feb 2012

Our campsite at Amity Point - right near the jetty and good spot to throw a line in. Despite the rain we had some patches of good weather, unfortunately we didn't get a sunset while we were there.

This was at the southern end of the track, we only went up it about 200m to have a play in the puddles, we were short on time.

Posing - maybe one for the calander comp - wife calls it, "he's going to run me over"

Up the creek, this is in off the beach, only about 50mm deep here, very solid too.

We didn't go that far up the track, but this bit was fun. It feels a bit funny just driving up a creek - the creek feels quite simliar to Eli at Fraser (not as deep, but if you drove right up that you'd be in some strife)

            Down the other side.

Mate in his Navara - this is on the way back out. On the way up the creek we got through here easy, on the way out you were lifting two wheels, I drove around the side (continuing along the creek) cause I was ripping it up too much with my front right.

While I was taking the previous photo, my wife decided she wanted a go.

She didn't want to stop either, I walked the rest of the way to the beach, on camera duty.

Now just before this I had said, to get up out of the creek, go steady and when the wheels start to go up give it some to get up over the bank. She only heard "give it some"

              But she got up ok.

We also did the Tripod Track - again good fun and you can make a wrong turn and follow the powerlines for a bit - it's on on the map for access, but there was no gate either and there are plenty of them. The last part of tripod up to the lookout is barricaded off, and give the rain and we'd been there before we didn't take a look, you could probably still get up there on foot, there are plenty of good views from the track anyway.

On another note, while we were there, there were a number of signs about how stopping mining will kill the island and all the small businesses. We were saying how we would love to have a key to all those fire trails and mine tracks, if the mines go we reckon Redland council should turn north straddie into a bit of a 4wd park/destination it's a brilliant spot.

This track was good fun and the bits we did (while only a small part of it) were great fun and suitable for any level of skill I reckon (give it a go, or go round) and in most cases there is room to turn around if your not keen to go forwards.

Thanks for posting these great pic Big Dog. Sound like it was a great trip. We'll have to include this track in our itinerary. Looks like even with the rain you had whilst over there, the creek was OK. (still gunna make the Mrs Walk it!)

Last I saw Fishermans track was still gated off. Has been a couple of months since I've been there though.
If it is you'll need to access the keyholes track from the northern access off the beach or in from Tazi rd at the southern end as previously mentioned.
Still a good view from Tripod lookout but yep, it's a walk up the last, very soft 100 or so mtrs.
                  Have fun though.
                  Cheers, Leon
There's no such thing as a wrong turn... it's just the scenic route!

Craig Stewy and I were over there a couple of weeks ago and the Keyholes Track from Tazi Rd is quite scary now. We drove about 300 mts and in that time went through two mud holes with water over the bonnet!

The problem with this track is that the holes are orange muddy water and you can't see the bottom I know from experience that there are large holes where the old drainage pipes have rusted out, there are also large rocks in there definitely not to be tackled on your own on the wet anymore.

The Tripod track is in good knock but because it no longer maintained you can't see over the top of the coastal scrub so no views at the tripod anymore still s nice drive about 30 mins.

See ya on the tracks, Richo

Ps give me a call when your in front of google and I can show you some challenging unauthorized tracks.

We did a week at Straddie the 2010-11 Xmas, pissed down raining the entire time, but my son and law and I (he in a Jeep) did the Tripod and then the Fishermans Track....it's quite good fun but some of the puddles were pretty deep. Passed a few "non snorkel" vehicles coming back and they said "too much for us"...but no worries for the mighty Prado with lift and Snorkel.

I agree with the comments about opening it up if the sand miners go, them thar hills would be full of gold!!
