  • Flood Warning for Alice Springs

Looks like where in for a big one here in Alice over the next couple of days leading up to Christmas and possibly longer. BOM has issued a major weather warning from cyclone "laurence" that it could see the Todd River running again. Could be the 10 year floor where due-

So much for my trip to Davenport Ranges, might be busy with Northern Territory Emergency Services over the weekend.

Well John, we wont be here to see it will we? I predicted a possible flood when I first started monitoring Lawrence a week or so ago, however it may go south of Alice unless a front moves in from the south west of WA to push the cloud back up to Alice's latitude.

Believe it when I see see. Always seems to evaporate when it moves over Alice or slip south. Fingers crossed. Would be nice to see the waterholes filled.

Bugger! I have to travel up the Great Central Rd through to Warburton, Warakurna, then through to Kintore and then back through Blackstone commencing day after Boxing day.

Looks like I better take plenty of supplies for the trip in case I get "stuck."

Take plenty of lager if your likely to get stuck. Id be staying off the dirt if you can, the dirt turns to mud after a few solid hours of rain. Get real sticky too.

Re: Flood Warning for Alice Springs

Got the call into Emergency Services HQ yesterday for a crisis flood meeting. We headed out to do a door knocking for all the residents effected if the Todd rises more than at the level that the pics show, which was higher then last time. These pics have been taken from down stream up to The Junction Waterhole.

South and Leichardt Tce was closed to traffic and all causeways had been closed the previous night.

The Taffy Pick crossing near Lasseters Casino was closed and all traffic to the area had to go the long way around.

Pics taken outside the Todd Tavern, the footbridge looking a bit scary to walk on.

Wiggleys Gorge, normally dry and not a lot to see. It is really moving here.

These pics are a little down stream from Wiggleys waterhole. In the background there is a bunch of young people swimming, how they got across the river is a mystery.

The last 2 pics is The Junction Waterhole, this is the most upstream we travelled yesterday.

Today its real humid, feels like where up the Top End. Its still very cloudy and looks like where going to get more rain in the next few hours,

You only need to lose your footing, which actually doesn't take much, and then you're in deep trouble. The depth of the water is almost insignificant. Its the hidden dangers of rocks, debris, having one of your limbs caught on something or just hitting your head.

I can't believe the stupidity of some people. And when someone gets washed away, they'll expect rescuers to risk their lives to save them - if they can. If they can't and the worse occurs, they then seek to blame authorities for supposedly letting these things happened (ie why weren't we stopped or warned).

Re: Flood Warning for Alice Springs

Great photo's Zook. And great to see the Todd a banker again. I remember as a kid in the late 60s and 70s watching the Todd flow. It was a school excursion back then. I may have been smaller but I always remember the normally dry river to be quite deep and having to crawl up and out of the banks on all fours. I reckon the couch grass and bamboo have trapped a lot of sand over the years so it doesn't seem take much to break the banks now.
That photo of your NTES hilux on South Tce reminded me of when I was covering the '88 flood for the local paper. Most people couldn't get into work. We hired an Avis LandCruiser and in that 'very spot' the water was lapping the bonnet of the cruiser. The Todd Mall was a river at the time and it took a long time for the power to be connected again.
Moral: Don't buy ex rental cars.
