  • melbourne - townsville...good overnight stays?

heading to townsville from melbourne in a couple of weeks...anyone know of any good overnight stays on the way? melbourne - hillston - cunnamulla (want to avoid cunnamulla if possible, don't really want to have to get 4 new wheels one day in!) - barcaldine then straight through.

    cheers,

    mark.

Re: melbourne - townsville...good overnight stays?

    Gday Mark,

have done the exact trip a few times, but we have family in northern nsw so that generally dictates the route. If might be of help to you.....
    we generally went:
Melb, up hume, Shepparton, tocumwal, narendera, west wyalong, parkes dubbo, after dubbo you there are two options, we took the right hand fork to see family or there is the left fork at gilgandra.

When is QLD though, we often went St george, Roma, Springsure, Emerald, Clermont, belyando crossing, Charters Towers, home. This avoids the busier roads. The towns are probably further apart but i like that, i prefer to just drive for a few hours and stop, then get back on the road without the hassel. There used to be a bit of dirt around Belyando crossing but i think it may be all blacktop now. As for places to stay, it may not work out so well for you because of our family stops, and its been a while im not sure where it was now ops: But that route might give you another option.......

      Hi Mark,

Are you travelling with kids or just adults? This will tell you how far you can travel in a day. Also how quickly do you want to get there? Do you have a week or 2-3 days only? Will you be camping or at motels?

I have travelled the some way as slug has suggested with a 3 y/old and it is a very easy drive and have done it over 5 days without even thinking about it. Can also be done I think in about 3 day very confortably.

One place I would recommend is at Moree at the thermal springs
