With the long weekend and the need to put some serious KM's onto the Prado before the end of the FBT year we decided to head for Coral bay over the weekend.
All went well until we got to the Kalbarri turnoff north of Geraldton about 1:00 PM on Saturday. The Boys in blue were stopping the traffic due to a fire - we could see the big pall of smoke. We were told that they expected the road to be closed for about 4 hours, so we went into Kalbarri. Back out to the highway about 5:00 and the MRD bloke said "should be open in half an hour" so we sat and waited. Then police came along and said it would be closed all night and probably most of Sunday.
So it was back to Kalbarri, where we decided to stay 2 nights. Left to come home on Monday. - Highway north still closed.
Got to Dongara and the highway south was closed due to fires, so had to divert east and came down through Mingenew and Moora.
Heard on the radio that the highway between Northampton and Geraldton was also closed so looks like we just got out in time.
