  • Kalbarri - What to do ? Questions

I just booked our accommodation for the long weekend in September at Kalbarri and was just wondering if anyone had suggestions on the best things to see & do while where up there :?: As i've never been past Wedge Island I really need some advice on what recovery gear to pack including any must take items.

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers Tyson

Well I would be heading out to Kalbarri National Park and checking things out. Make sure you see the rock Window. Looks pretty cool.
I'm not sure if it is still operating but you used to be able to go horse riding at a joint down on the Murchison River. They would do a river crossing on horse back.
You could hangout on the beach and I believe you can drive onto the beach but I think this is only the southern end?.
There are some good pubs to waste time and braincells.
I think that the Murchison Offroad Adventures on Coolcalalaya station is reasonably close if you want some more off roading. I'm guessing that would be maybe 120 - 150 kms away. You could go there and have a real adventure

We'll be there for two weeks over the schools holidays (this will be our third year, we love the place!)

If time is against you, I would dedinitely try to take in the in-land gorges. You won't need recovery gear for any of the corrugations (unless to stop and assist broken down Backpackers in their Wicked Camper vans)

If you find yourself with an extra day, you could book yourself in for a 4wd tagalong tour on Murchison Station - bookings at the tourist bureau. The station is about 30 klms out of town and it's a great time of the year to see wildflowers and some beautiful countryside. This will finish around 3.00 pm. Although I have taken recovery gear with me, I've never needed it.

If you have a couple of hours free, try going for an explore around the many tracks along the Murchison River - heaps of places to stop for a picnic and throw in a line! Again, nothing that the Prado wouldn't be able to handle, but might be worth dropping tyre pressures to be sure.

If you have an hour spare, try a jet-boat ride - nothing beats heading past the river head, full-boar with AC/DC cranking over the stereo.

Have fun, I'm sure you'll love it and will want to go back!
