Not sure if it helps those in the Sydney environs but I needed to have a factory fitted Hollandia 700 sunroof removed in my Falcon to effect roof repairs (neighbors kid and a wayward cricket bat). A $2,500 insurance job but the repairer had to send it to Webasto.com.au in Kirrawee as, like the Prado it is bonded in and needed the specialist to redo.

Not wanting a dodgy job I rang the workshop for my own comfort, and they really knew what they were doing and I'm more then happy with the work done 2yrs ago. Use the sunroof on a daily basis so it gets a workout.

Anyway may pay to see if they are an alternative $-wise to TMC doing the repairs as I say I can't fault their workmanship.

Not a regular poster but came across this thread and ...thought I better check mine out (!!???) and .....blow me down senseless there is rust under the rubber seal right against the glass, adjacent to the frame. Bar that, sunroof still works. Being a low mileage/good cond car I may see a sunroof repairer to stop the rust spreading. Once its fixed, I'll then know to grease and maintain it properly. Third owner, has always been under cover. Just think the rain has pooled under the seal, which is now lifting slightly owing to the rust. With the cracked dash and this ..now know why previous move it on for an X5. Future owners.. watch for these defects in the older Prados and negotiate a discount to fix these QC issues!!

Many thanks Steve M for pointing out all the defects.. not going for an expensive 3k+ repair thou..bit of silicone may do!!??

Welcome mate, I never had an issue with the rust in my 90 grande, it wasn't metal around the glass like the 120's are. Just sent you a PM......Cheers Steve

I thoroughly checked my 04 grande sun roof today and completely removed the rubber that runs around the edge and there is no rust coming through anywhere... Touch wood

Hi Josh. I.ve been through a few threads, especially#11
            http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-Rusty-Sunroof

For future PP'ers who may be bold enough to do the work ourselves, were you able to get the seal back on again O.K?? With reference to #11 it sounds a very precarious job! I'm thinking of taking it to a pro in case I stuff it all all, facilitating in a >3K for a new glass/frame and rubber from Mr Toyo! Apparently it's all one bonded unit with a membrane underneath. Once you stuff this membrane the whole unit is stuffed re water ingress??

Glad you found no rust. I do concur with post #11 thou. They will all go that way...best to keep greasing it regularly and leave it 1/2 open in garage (occasionally) to air out!!?? Once mine is fixed, that's what I'll be doing!
            Cheers Charles

              That's interestin re post #11.

My rubber seal is not glued or 'bonded' as he puts it at all. I just pushed my finger between the metal and rubber lip and pushed it up, the seal just lifted out. It is a tight fit but there is no glue on mine across the front at all.

Ta. I'm going to wait till I get an Sunroof installer/repairers opinion then go from there. I was going to suggest there could be a difference between the 2003 version compared to later versions... >2004(yours), but Steve M mentions various affected years in an earlier post so highly unlikely, but Import is listed on my rego certificate!! Anyway, pleased all is good.

Old Thread, but just posting an update form my sunroof antics in my Grande 2004 - It jammed.
Got home on Friday and my sunroof wouldn't shut :-( Click Click Click, I could tell it was stuck on the passenger side. Put a tarp over the roof rack to keep it dry from the rain on Friday night.

On Saturday, after reading scary posts on this forum about thousands of dollars, i could see no option but to start poking around. Poke poke, pull pull, unscrew unscrew - but there was only one thing for it - lower the whole roof lining - so I did, disconnected the battery (air bags) and started from the front to the rear.

The sunroof unit is held in place with brackets and bolts, i un did these and the 4 drain pipes (one on each corner) and lowered it on to the roof lining and slid it back through the rear door.

As I lowered it down, some coins dropped out - doh ! That will be the fuel kitty from the Simpson trip this year. My mate put coins in the little bag and a 2$ and a 10c coin must have sneaked out, eventually finding there way onto the rail.

I decided it to give it a thorough clean with truck wash (tracks were a but sandy and grimy) and careful aiming of the kararcher and let it dry. Then used lithium grease to re grease the tracks and reversed the whole process. Tested it and it was perfect, so remounted it up again and closed it - PERFECT!

Put roof lining back in, DVD player etc and it is just like a bought one !

VERY HAPPY ! Fortune saved, disaster averted !

Tips for next time: Clean your tools first (I got the roof a bit dirty cause of dirty hands from tools)

In the actual black sunroof part? Didn't even check actually. Wasn't even thinking that. Drains were all clear which is a good omen. No rust on actual car might just pretend it's ok - a friends had blocked drains and water sloshing around until I got the compressor on to it.

Yeah it's generally on the sunroof panel itself, normally if you open the roof up a bit then squeeze the rubber a bit you can feel it crumble in your fingers if any there
