  • 90 series Prado

so I'm really keen on buying a 90's series Prado.
but after some research into it i can't seem to find a lot of "after market goodies" to put on it.
does anyone know if there is much you can do to a Prado?
and if perhaps there is other accessories from other model cars that will fit?
    (eg- hilux, 90 series etc.)
    thanks heaps in advance!

    What gear are you after?

Almost all the major 4x4 accessory manufacturers make suspension lifts, lockers (ARB & TJM), winch bars, cargo barriers, side steps and a few make under body protection plates. The list goes on, but a little more info and we may be able to point you in the right direction.

With regards to interchangeable parts, 1996-2002 4runners share similar chassis with the 90's, so many custom suspension components are compatible.

    Cheers,
    Declan.

      Re: 90 series Prado

Look at the 90 series section.

Basically, off the shelf you can easily get the following:

      - 2" lift (heaps of brands)
      - snorkel (heaps of brands)
      - wheels/tyres (heaps of brands)
      - bullbars (heaps of brands)
      - sliders and scrub bars (few brands, have to look to find them but they can be sourced, or custom made)
      - Lockers (most brands, ARB do front and rear)
      - Bash plates (a few brands)
      - Exhaust (off the shelf for diesel, custom for petrol, extractors off the shelf for both fuels)

Most parts (engine/chassis) will interchange with a 4runner of the same generation.
Also engine parts for the Toyota Tacoma (same years) SHOULD fit.

Anything else you need to know just chuck a thread up in the 90 series section and you'll get a reply pretty quickly!

        Re: 90 series Prado

Thanks heaps for the quick replies.
ill take a look into it all =)
also i've heard word that the alternator sits low in the 90's series, and is prone to getting mud and water logged.
        is this true?
and is there any way of preventing this, besides stearing clear of water crossings??
any information on this is MUCH appreciated!
        thanks in advance guys!

Water crossings are fine if done properly, i.e. choose the right speed and keep it constant that way the bow wave of the vehicle will keep the alternator from becoming saturated.

Try and avoid deep mud though. Diff deep puddles aren't too bad but try and avoid anything deeper. It's a good idea to have a look in the passenger side wheel arch and check that the plastic sheet between the chassis rails and the wheel arc are there. That will help protect the alternator from mud.

            Re: 90 series Prado

Hi Williade, how are you ?? Yes muds a killer on the 90 series V6 been there done that lol. There is a slight way to deflect the mud and that is to go clark rubber and buy some rubber slightly thicker (not too much) buy yourself some new clips (ones that push in holding original flaps in pace) then cut the newer bits of rubber bigger to cover more of the area that is open to the engine bay (not to get in the way of the suspension components) and you will find you can cover quit a considerable amount more then the pissy ones toyota have put there. Once you have done that then take the old one off sit it over the new one using the old one as a template for the holes. I did this with mine, while it obviously wont totally stop the problem is certainly helps quit a bit. While ploughing through the mud is fun hitting it with extreme speed can force it into some components that really dont like it. After spending quit a bit of $$$ on numerous 4wd's I have owned, rear mains, alternator, starter, brake lines, ABS sensors torn off the list goes on I now take it alot easier when approaching mud puddles, normally drop the from in then give it to it to get through, I find your not drenching internal parts under the bonnet or punching mud into areas mud really doesnt need to be eg alternator. And Im not just talking late model cars, I had 89 2.8D hilux you know the unbreakable one ?? NOT, heaps of power, again NOT, rear seals, rear wheel cylinders, alternator, etc. My mate who owns a 4wd tour company always says to me ""mud means money"" but after saying all the above I still like playing in it like the rest of you, I just dont drive through it as quick so that I spray the camera lady standing on the embankment on the side, she some times gets really pissed having to stick the 2g camera up her shirt and then looks like a drowned rat in this brown looking stuff, and certainly doesnt like those puddles that have been laying for a while, you no the ones, the ones that 30 seconds later you screw your nose up and think jeesus thats stinks, the wife hates them ones LOL.....Have fun guys. Regards steve

              Re: 90 series Prado

I havnt done any thing to protect my alternator yet, it has been flooded with mud and water about three times now and i have worked out that if you take your alternator off, then take the back cover of it and give it a soaking with CRC then use electrical contact cleaner to dry it all out. That has worked for me a few times now.
