  • Ironman Snorkel

    Hi all

Tried searching and couldnt find anything, has anyone got an ironman snorkel?
how easy are they to fit? any other feedback?

Next question is if I decide to get one, where do I get a 95mm hole saw to cut through the guard etc?

    Cheers all

    Re: Ironman Snorkel

Haven't seen anyone with an Ironman snorkel, but there are DIY threads for Safari snorkels and I think there are even ones for Airtec snorkels... They can't be that different can they??

Just check out the accessories threads under the 120 section, unless of course you have a 90 or 150 series.

Yes they can be very different, Only ever use the Safari or Airtec snorkels, all the other brands you see on the market, are very poor quality, they either restrict the air flow, leak, melt in the hot sun, or they don't fit properly. I think the Ironman one is a Airflow brand, which is one of the worst brands out there.

I meant different as in 'different to install', not so much 'different quality'...

Personally I steer well clear of anything with the Ironman brand other than straps and compressors, but to answer the second part of your question, whichever brand you end up going with your best bet is to hire a hole saw from your local hire shop. When Terry and I fitted our Safari Snorkels we paid $20 to hire one for the day.

Croozza - got any info to back up these claims? Melting and Restricting airflow? How so? have you measured the throat on these personally?

Reason I ask is I am considering an ironman snorkel. I heard the same crap about their suspension but I am very happy with it.

hey andrew, have had an ironman snorkel on my 120 for nearly 4 years now, done a number of water crossing in and around high country, yarra valley, gippsland etc no leaks no melting. Vehicle sits in sun all summer at work and still tight in its fitment. You may suck the odd bug or moth down it, but all in all i'm happy. Fitted it myself comes with a template (measure and check twice so your happy) just take time and mask/tape up area for hole saw which a place like total tools should sell ( other stores like bunnings, mitre 10, home hardware may need to order in) i used a 'suttons' brand not cheap cos you need the correct arbor to suit its size. hope this helps
              cheers, trav.

Personally after checking out quite a bit of IRONMAN gear of late, I must say that their build quality has definately imporved.. I wouldn't have any problems using their gear.

I would think that IRONMAN for the most part have taken the good bits learnt from most manufacturers over the years and found a cheaper alternative for manufacture, hence why I think their products are pretty good nowadays as they are loosely based on the good gear that is already out there....

I have a brand new snorkel sitting in the garage but MUMSRIG herself doesn't like them so in the garage it will stay until we drown the motor going through a crossing! Hope not~!

Hi guys I have just fitted a new ironman snorkel to my 2003 Grande Prado over the weekend and thought I would share me experiences with you all.

In my opinion the quality of the ironman snorkel is extremely good, much better than I was expecting. It is also much thicker and heavier than expected; the snorkel is at least 5-6mm thick and feels very solid. I think that if you were to break this than there would be a lot more damage to your car to worry about than just the snorkel.

The fit of the snorkel to the car was very good with no gaps when everything was done up. Being a cheaper snorkel I thought that it might be restrictive to the air flow, but I having had a good look over it I don’t think this is the case. It is of a large free flowing design. The piece that goes in the inner guard which connects the snorkel to the pre spinner is also as large as possible and free flowing with gentle curves to aid in good air flow.

The only thing that I would say let the kit down a little was the template was not very accurate. It still worked fine but the location of some of the mounting holes was a little out. I guess this is why they say to drill 16mm holes when the studs are only 6mm and to use the large washers which are supplied. In reality this not a problem as the snorkel body fully covers all the holes.
