  • V8 Turbo land cruiser Problems

Does any one know of any problems regarding the V8 turbo and twin turbo (namely an injector fault at around 30k to 50k km) found in the 70 series and the 200 series land cruisers?

this is not a bag session, I just heard a 'rumour' that there is a problem, and my computer illiterate father in-law is about to buy one for a work car.

If this is the wrong part of the forum i apoligize in advance.
I thought I would be differant and get a silver prado...

I think the bigger problem the V8 Turbo Diesels have is oil consumption.

I'm not sure about any injector issues though, another member may be able to clarify. But even if there were injector issues, just as with the early 120 D4D's it has likely been resolved with updated injector like the late model 120 and 150 D4D.

The only problem they had was the oil consumption like williade said, however Toyota came up with a fix for that, with a different seal kit and by changing some pipe work for the turbo(s), There is no such injector fault for this vehicle.

Mine is one of the early ones (late 2007 build), and did have a single failed injector. Replaced by toyota under waranty at around 90,000km. No issues before or since. It was obvious too - blowing smoke and loud ticking/clicking from the injector - it's not a commonly reported issue though, so more likely "just one of those things".

Oh yes, the turbo seal was replaced on mine early on in it's life (around 40,000km from memory) by Toyota. I'm not sure if this was a recall or not - they just did it and told me afterwards (no charge, etc).

As others have mentioned, oil consumption is more of an issue. Mine used bugger all up untill about 60,000km, and then used about 1L per 10,000km travelled. This may be dependant upon the load (loaded canopy and rooftop tent of around 600kg plus permanently on the back of the ute), how the vehicle is used/driven and the actual oil used also. Mine is not a daily driver, so when used, it's used offroad and/or on long distance hauls for trips.

I actually work with someone now who can now do oil analysis so I took samples of my oil every 2000km (over the 10,000km service interval) and had him test it (samples taken during a trip from Perth to the Vic High Country - 8000km of long days on the highway cruising at around 110km/hr, around 1500km of slow/low range touring in the mountains, and about 500km around town when I got back to Perth this March just gone - Vehicle at 100,000 to 110,000km on the odo).

Analysis showed that the oil was all good (no high contaminant or soot levels, and the viscosity stable) up until around the 8,000km test, where the viscosity had dropped a bit (slight drop in oil level measured on dipstick also), and by 10,000km the viscosity was poor (and oil was being used so needed a topup of a litre - oil level low on dipstick).

Chatting with the oil tester told me I need to find an oil with a better shear rate (holds it's viscocity better over the uses I put it to [which according to Toyota they classify as 'extreme' - yeah right]), or simply change the oil every 8,000km instead of every 10,000km. So far I haven't had any luck finding an economical oil with a better shear rate (to hold the viscocity over the 10,000km service interval), so I think I'll just stick to doing the oil changes every 8,000km from now on. It's out of waranty now anyway.

Also, going by info/rumors/chit-chat on the LCOOL forum; toyota are supposed to have changed something to do with the pistons or piston rings in the engine to help prevent oil usage. The other comment that's come up on LCOOL is that when running in the engine in the first 1000km, don't do like the manual says and take it easy, etc - but drive it normally, and after a few hundered km, put a load on the engine. I can't comment on either of these, they're just what others have written on that forum.

        I hope the info helps..............

I think this is good advice for any diesel engine. The only ones I have seen that were babied were engines that gave problems later. I think a diesel engine runs in better if it is loaded and worked (note not lugged and caned). This is what I have done with my last 4 diesels and just done for the new tractor.
