  • AT oil Temp 120 V6 Grande

    Hi there,
I went for a drive to Bribie this weekend and took the kids for a swim up the beach. On the way back we drove on the high tide mark, the sand was a bit soft but nothing that we have not been on before. Half way back I noticed my AT Oil temp light come on, this is the first time this has ever come on since I have owned the Prado. So disengaged the 4x4 and drove in normal all wheel drive for 10min till the light went off.
Can anyone tell me if this is a problem? I have been on much softer sand at Frasers and never seen this AT oil light come on.

This has been an issue with the new 150 series Prado: http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...g-Auto-Gearbox but I haven't heard about it being an issue with the 120 series, nor have I seen it on my car in sand. I would say that the AT fluid did get hot, but shouldn't be a problem as long as the oil was allowed to cool before proceeding. I'm not sure that disengaging the diff lock helps a lot to cool the transmission fluid, perhaps stopping to allow the oil to cool is a better option.

I would suggest that your transmission fliud level and condition be checked. Is it the 4speed or 5speed auto? 5speed auto has no dipstick to check fluid level: http://www.lcool.org/technical/100_s...fluid/auto.htm also the 5speed auto uses specific WS fluid rather than the regular type IV fluid used in the 4speed auto.

      Thanks Peter,
My Prado is a 4 speed, and have also never seen this light come on before.I just had the AT transmission oil changed 2 months ago. They charged me $350 for the oil change as this is a special oil according to Toyota.
Checked the oil level on the dip stick and its at max leve.So will go back and test it next weekend to see if this happens again.
      cheers.

The later model 120 (around late 2007) came with a auto transmission cooler.

My 03 V6 has a transmission oil cooler. It's a smaller radiator looking thing in front of the 'normal' radiator.

ywork can you tell me what suspension setting you were using and did you have the centre diff lock on. in soft sand with an angle on the beach it appears the stability and traction control play havoc and you have to use more right boot. i had this problem on sunday , ive only had it once before neither time has the a/t light come on but when ive stopped you can smell that things are not right .

My 2009 D4D doesn't have a trans cooler that I am aware of, might just be a V6 thing.

I agree that unlocking the centre diff wouldn't make much difference. A couple of months back towing out CT up a very looooong steep hill in the high country in 1st high the A/T light came on, I dropped it into low range and the light went out within a few seconds.

                    Cheers Andrew

According to the Toyota manual I have it's listed as (A750F (1GR-FE)) (2004.8 -) which suggests its been on the V6 since late 2004. My late 2006 V6 certainly has one.

I went camping with friends who were driving a GXL 120 V6 auto that was pre-climate control A/C. From memory it was around an early 2007 model and I thought it didn't have the transmission cooler. Could be wrong though.

when i first got my car last year, i went to try it on the sand dunes , after 15 minutes i reilazied i didn't engage the 4H , and i was impressed (tire presure was 35 PSI ) ( i used to drive jeeps before) and no way it would move on soft sand with 35PSI
when it became hot around mid day the AT temp light came on , i just stopped the car for 5 minutes and it went off . never happened again
later i installed a bigger transmition cooler with a gauge .
