We have a rivnut tool at work but it is set up only for 5mm nuts. I needed 6mm nuts for my dual battery install but am too cheap to buy one.
I decided that it wouldnt be too hard to make one so this is how I did it.
Used a old cheap rivet gun I had in tool box and removed the anvils and spring from inside it.

using a length of 6mm stainless allthread , placed a nylock nut about half way down length to hold it central in where the rivet would normally be placed.
The back end of the rivet gun where it is normally assembled was luckily just a 12mm thread so drilled out a airgun nozzle to 6mm and threaded the end to fit in the rear part of rivet gun. assembled the bits onto allthread rod and welded a wingnut so the thread could be easily screwwed out of rivnut once it was placed in position.

the rest of pictures should show how it all goes together. Works well fitted 6mm nuts in guards, and in case I need smaller also made a 5mm shaft as well.
