  • Biodiesel conversion for 1KZTE

    Hello friends
    I want to start a important discussion and see how knowledge can be shared. Has anyone converted a 1kzte (Turbo EFI version) engine to run on Waste Vegitable Oil (WVO) or Virgin Vegetable Oil (VVO) dual tank or single tank system? Since the engine is non direct injection it is a super candidate to convert.

    1. If someone has experience in this please share as much details since I am about to make a conversion. Particualry interested in WVO and home made biodiesel.
    2. If there are problems in running please share experiences. I already know about the temperature issues but are there any other issues to worry on the fuel system.
    3. If there is a tried and tested DIY conversion please recommend. I have already done lot of research and there is doubt which on to go with Toyota.

    Not personally, but a bloke who lived around the corner ran his surf on wvo without any hitches. He collected wvo and filtered it at home. Stored it and put it in his fuel tank. The fuel line passed through a heater in order to thin it out for use through the injectors. Basically he started the car on diesel and ran it to operating temperature. Then he would switch over to wvo and drive the car as normal, again he would switch back to diesel a few km's before reaching his destination. The system he ran was a dual tank system with filter, in line fuel heater and a solenoid that would switch at the pump.

    I also ran my 3 litre surf on neat biodiesel for over four years without any problems at all, in fact the 1kzt is a fantastic motor to run on these alternative fuels and will not complain at all. The car ran cleaner and smoother running bio and power drop off was marginal at best, it was also a bundle cheaper to run as well. I did however need to change fuel filters quite frequently in the beginning as the bio stripped all the crap out of the fuel lines, it was very noticeable inside the filter, after a few months on bio it was the cleanest it ever ran and so quiet and smooth too. The one thing mentioned was power output was down running on wvo to a point where it was noticeable, however the savings outweighed any power loss by a longshot.

      Thanks for your great feedback. This is excellent. Is your 1kz an electronic fuel injection? Just wondering whether an electronic fuel pump system starts playing to different grades of fuel and ultimately turns the engine check light on?

      Already I have decided to go for the conversion. I am taking the maximum precautions

        I have spoken to a person that has done a lot of testing on alternative fuels.
        His response is 'don't do it', it will be very costly in replacing damaged injectors and fuel pumps.
        He also said not to use E10 fuel in petrol engines, use 95 octane as it is much more efficient and will not damage components as ethonol will.
        Sold the Prado. Now FJ Cruiser
